Many years ago I wanted an auxiliary tender to go along with my MTH RailKing Norfolk & Western Y6B.  The costs of the manufactured aux tenders was too prohibitive for me so I turned an unlettered starter set tender into an aux tender.  The only decals I could get at the time were white so that's what I used.IMG_2314

When added to the Y6B recently I realized I had to address some issues, the gap between tenders was too great, my aux tender was too light and the white decals just weren't cutting it.  Well I'm working on those issues and I'm stuck on removing the old decals.  At the time I made the tender my painting capabilities were limited so once the decals were applied I used the Pledge Futura method of clear coating the decals for protection.  The Pledge can be seen clearly in the photo above.  definitely not as good as a good spray of matte clear across the whole tender.

Now I'm trying to remove these decals and am not having much success.  I first tried alcohol.  This helped remove the Pledge but did nothing to the decals themselves.  I tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and removed the "ERN" letters but not the underlying decal film. I've been letting some Micro Set work on it for over an hour with no result.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Coach Joe , before you scrape any thing of wipe something down with lacquer thinner there are several  hobby supplies  that aid in the removal of lettering from a model. keep in mind there are 3 major ways of lettering , model trains.  Water slide decals, Printing, and dry transfer, and there was a listing here  (several months ago) on just this subject  along with what you might need.     If you are sure its just a water slide  decal  it may be as easy as just letting it the body soak over night in  a bucket of very warm water , over night to release it from the tender body

Coach - try this. Used by window tinters to remove old window film. Lay tender on it side, taking a wet sponge, wipe the decal, leaving a noticeable residue of water droplets, then cover overnight, tightly, with saran wrap. See if that helps to lift decal. If yes, remove decal, or, if incomplete, repeat until entire decal can be removed. Repeat process for other side.

You say you clear coated using Pledge Future.  That's a waxy medium, for which removal is a dilute solution of ammonia.  A common household product that fills that bill is window cleaner...like Windex. Try it.

I'd first try removing the Pledge before trying some of the other suggestions folks have offered.  Then, if you have some Testor's Easy Lift-Off (ELO) you could try that on the lettering.

OTOH, removing the paint and the lettering is always a viable option.  Shouldn't be that difficult a re-paint/letter project....IMHO, of course.

FWIW...
