A former Sant Fe car repainted and used K4 decals to Pennsy. God Speed all!

My 10’-by-5’ layout is small and looks best with small locomotives and short trains. This week, I ran Conrail #8606 SW8 diesel switcher with just two boxcars and a Conrail caboose.

Conrail was organized by the US Government to preserve rail service in the Northeast following the bankruptcy of the Penn Central – which was created by the merger of the Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads, so I run this locomotive with boxcars of the PRR, NYC, and New England railroads.

The boxcars are Pennsylvania #19247 (built 1959), with my hobo friend climbing aboard, and Boston & Maine #73199 (built 1942).

I don't often post in these Boxcar Sunday threads, typically I use the 'buy anything cool lately' thread.  But, I got this NIB B&LE boxcar off the bay a couple of days ago.  I bought it because I saw it on last week's rendition, and thought it was cool.

This is probably the most modern train I own   A string of boxcars without roofwalks  LOL

Just finished these three cars yesterday. MTH and Weaver cars, with one MTH O-27 thrown in…

Happy Easter Sunday Boxcar fans. This week I'll start with a couple Great Northern 40 footers. Growing up 60 feet from the Burlington Route tracks I remember the merger well and the great Northerns Rocky the Goat logos arrival. I have dozen or more different paint schemes from several manufactures. These 2 are MTH models.

Hi Dave Ripp, I happen to have an old Great Northern kit car with the Goat logo on it. What a great logo. I am partial to kit cars like this one, especially in Tuscan. As a boy growing up on a New Haven main line, long freights with many cars in the Tuscan color were most of the consist.

Something that would make this project much better would be to stumble upon a bunch of undecorated Atlas 50’ plug door boxcars not of the “cushioned underframe” type.  As always with me, I want what cannot be found.

I too really like this scheme, but mainly because it was the only Merchandise Service scheme used during my late 40s era.  This MS scheme, referred to as Phase 1, went from 1947 to 1950.  I will keep my eye open for the Weaver model.

MTH also did Phase 1 on some of their models, but their first effort on a 40' car was wrong.  They put both words on the same side of the door.

Their next run of this scheme on a 40' boxcar got it right.

Pennsy's also had 50' and 60' boxcars in MS Phase 1, and on these they had both words on the same side of the door.  While no model of a 60' boxcar has been done in MS Phase 1, MTH did do a 50' boxcar.

I hope someday a manufacturer (importer?) does a 60' boxcar and I can show all three.

Around merger time glacier green seemed to be the most common. I do my best to stay around 1971 on my layout but I do have boxcars with built dates back to the 40's but none after 71.

Years ago, a 60' kit was offered, I have two somewhere in the stash.

All of the Weaver cars that I have pictured are costom runs we did. The Pennsylvania Merchandise box car was always my favorite.

David, it is one of our custom run cars,.

This Genessee Beer car is one we done. Our local beer distributor had this pictured on a billboard as you entered Homer City.

According to my inventory have 10 of these.  I bought these after seeing an old Pennsy ad with a Shark nose on point of a unit train of these box cars.
