Brand new smoke question

Nothing is wrong!  These Lionel smoke units are designed to release smoke "under the boiler" to give the appearance of steam coming from the cylinders.  I have two Lionel engines that smoke this way.

Ok ty , my 2 other penn flyers from 2012ish do not do that so i was wondering they came with ready sets

I'm not sure they're designed that way, but a lot of them do that. And I personally think it looks fine.  As Steam Crazy mentioned, it gives the appearance of steam coming out around cylinders.  Usually it's certain models that tend to do that more than others. Has to do with the airflow and the piston sucking smoke down into the chamber on the downstroke.  The pistons are sloppy fit and it will leak out past the piston.

Is there a easy upgrade for this? I am using mega steam , I really love the smoke the more the better,does the NADA mega steam really leave no smell? Ty -sam

The NADA still has a odor, just ask my wife!  I have been using a combination of 1/2 JT's Eliminator (low odor, but expensive)  and 1/2 NADA.  That helps mitigate the smell.  JT's Mega Steam products make the most smoke and it dissipates faster, in my experience.   Like you, I like lots of smoke!

If you have a Lionel unit even with only a puffer unit, best to use Lionel Premium.  More smoke and lingers longer.  That's if you like smoke....

I had a little of the regular stuff that came with my trains , what smokes more in a newer lionel train like mine the 2 penn flyers I'm not worried about ,but the big Berkshire with brass flywheel and train sounds, that's the one I love

Update: took piston out of smoke unit because running it with the shell removed I could see alot of smoke comming from the bottom of the piston. I removed the piston and found check balls and retainer out of the piston, I replaced them and glued the retainer. I resembled test ran perfect  nice big puffs !
