I am realatively new to hobby. Using Lionel Fastrak. Have all Legacy Locos. Want to buy Cab 2 controller with base (990) but want to make sure I get latest software version. Is it 1.6v? Is this s good idea? Thanks for the help!

You don't have to get too stressed out about the latest software, it's easy to update the software in the Legacy system. You will need at least one writable black module. If you're the least bit handy with a soldering iron, you can have black modules for free.

As GRJ says, Legacy is very easy to upgrade. Even easier since he provided the links for everything.
I recommend purchasing your Legacy 990 set new from a good Lionel authorized dealer so you will have a warranty.
