Probably a couple of other bits as well.  FWIW, you can buy the tender tether sets, I bought several of them from Mizell trains when they were still around.  I've used them for TMCC conversions, but obviously they could work for PS2 conversions as well.

Note that the connectors on the 5V and 3V PS2 boards are different, so you have to know which one you're using in that conversion...

Just get a PS-2 upgrade kit and do it.  Nothing beats all the parts in one box that are needed to do the job.  MTH smoke units are everywhere to be had.  Many K-Line hudsons are running on layouts with PS-2.  I understand what you are thinking about doing.  The better choice would be to sell the diesels and just buy an upgrade kit.  Nothing tops a fresh set of 3 volt PS-2 boards.

That switcher would sell for more than the kit cost.  I love North and South Carolina.  I pass through a few times a year while going to Florida.  I would love to see your layout.  A year ago, my friend Dave Pearson picked up a K Line Hudson at York that was converted and a fan driven smoke unit added and it is a very7 cool locomotive.  The K Line Hudson is a beautiful locomotive.

Marty,  we are having an open house and Smoky Mtn Model RR club meeting here on Sat 9/15 that you (and anyone else in the area) are welcome to come to. We are hoping to move and decided to 'finish' the layout as much as possible before it has to come down and will be taking photos soon 'for posterity'. It should look good by then.

The switcher has peeling paint on one side of the cab which just kills its resale value!  I like PS2 a lot and hope I can eventually have the Hudson operating with it.

Now if MTH would only start shipping them to club members, I'd be all set.

Well my dealer and I just got 10 PS2 upgrade kits in so you can't say that MTH isn't shipping them..and sorry but they're all spoken for
