As a youngster my mother and dad bought me an American Flyer freight set for Christmas. Unfortunaley, due to a house fire about 25 years ago the outer and inner boxes were destroyed by smoke damage and had to be dispoosed of, but the trains were salvaged relatively unscathed and I still have them today.

I'm trying to ascertain the dating of this set which includeds a 4-4-2 300AC steam locomotive with a Reading Lines tender, grey hopper 64, red caboose 638, a silver single dome Gulf tank car 625G [which I believe was purchased seperately] and a yellow boxcar 639.

Help in identifying what set this was and the year[s] available would be appreciated. I believe it was likely from the end of the 1940's or beginning of the 50's.

Thanks!

Kenn

Kenn,  Does the tender say 'Reading' or 'American Flyer'?

I had the PR K5 No 310 with similar cars from 1946-48. I believe the early locomotives used specific road names while the 1949 and later used 'American Flyer'.

I don't have any reference material at hand so this is just from memory...

Hi Sam:

I believe the change from tenders with a road name to “American Flyer” or “American Flyer Lines” along with the logo of the specific railroad in the upper forward corner occurred in 1948 when they switched from placing the smoke unit in the tender (SIT) to the opposite configuration of smoke unit in the boiler (SIB).  Chances are there was some overlap until all old tender body stock was used up.

I have my uncle’s original 1946 322 Hudson freight set which has “New York Central” lettering on the SIT tender plus I have a later 322 model with SIB with a tender lettered “American Flyer Lines” along with the “NYC” cigar-band logo in the upper forward corner on each side.   I also have a 312 SIB with "American Flyer Lines" and a Pennsy keystone in the upper corner.

HTH,

Bill
