Canopy for front of Ameritown 3 story city building.

Bend a wire to 3 sides of a rectangle to support a piece of striped paper. Drill 2 holes in the building to support the wire. Determine length of paper to hang over the wire and leave the front edge of the awning hanging down. Fold the paper and hang it on the wire, fold the back edge and glue it to the building.

I printed the paper with store name along the front using an inkjet printer.  The scalloped edges were done using really inexpensive patterned scissors used in scrapbooking.  Here is a link to a set.

That reminds me of former The Stork Club (in Manhattan) entrance canopy that I saw in a book about the Club. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your attempt; it has given me an idea.

For a canopy over a doorway you could use part of the plastic container that Crystal Light drink packets come in.  They are 2" x 2-3/4" oval shaped that come in two different lengths.  I cut them up and use the for various things.

Just cut lengthwise where the curved end starts to the appropriate length, short for doorway only or as long as necessary if you want to reach the curb.  The 2" width gives you an 8' wide awning.  Decorate as you wish, paint, cover with patterned paper or cloth.  I don't know if those fancy scrapbook scissors would cut a neat pattern through the plastic.  You could even use the bottom end so the awning has a front.
