Orrin, What Rich said. I will also mention Moody Street Trains at 3588 Indianola Ave as to post war equipment. This one is a must see. All of these shops are within a mile of each other in the northern part of downtown Columbus. For a 20 minute ride west in London, Ohio is Dunhams Trains, and they sell fresh honey too. Doug
Does Dunhams Honey still sell trains ? I use to purchase Atlas from them years ago.
Bill, Yes he does. He has a lot of newer Atlas O, MTH, and Lionel. Unlike the other central Ohio train stores, Dunhams is 100% O gauge. Doug
Rich, thanks for the link. It will be handy in the future.
Make sure you call the places first! I checked my zip code and some of the businesses were out of business!
Yes, several l once visited are kaput. Glad Dunham's is not. What others are STILL open?
The shops that are currently open are: Robbies Hobbies on High Street, The Train Station on Indianola, Moody Street Trains on Indianola, Hobby Land at Graceland Shopping Center on High Street, Macs Tom Thumb on Wilson Road, and Dunhams in London. The shops we lost were: Strete Hobbies, M&S Trains, Nworbs, G scale Junction, and a couple more Hobbylands. I have visited the shops that are currently open within the last two weeks. Call first to be sure! Doug
I stopped at the train shops. At Moody Street Trains I purchased a 6414 car carrier with orginal autos, and a couple of 6464 series box cars. At Robbies Hobbies I snagged a Santa Fe merchandise car that is very nice. Thank you all.
If you use our Dealer Locator and find a listing for a store that’s gone, send an email to publisher@ogaugerr.com and let Alan know. We’ll update the database accordingly.
Well, thought l had never been to Macs Tom Thumb, but discovered l had years (20+) ago. They stock no Plastruct, Evergreen, basswood or balsa, and are mostly RC autos with a taste of HO and Lionel O. They have been there, he said, since 1963. The Blue Caboose, once also on Indianola, l frequented back in that geologic past is, of course, long gone.
Many years ago I use to purchase KMT rolling stock from Tom Thumb hobby shop. Do they still have the huge slot car track in the back of the shop.
Bill
I noticed, l think, two? auto/slot car? racecourses in the back.
Macs Tom Thumb still has a huge 1/24 scale track that takes up most of the store. Think Mr. Muffins for slot cars. In the back they had a drag strip and an HO track. They hosted race events on a national level. Back in the old days when I lived on the west side of Columbus I would hit Mac's, M&S Trains and Strete Hobbies regularly. When the owners passed on the shops closed. Luckily Mac's son was able to take over Tom Thumb. Another shop that was serious about O gauge was Nworbs (Browns spelled backwards) on Morse Road. So many have folded over the years, glad I was able to experience good well stocked shops when I did! Doug
Was Nworb's on/near Karl Rd. off Morse? Might have gotten there once as was closing.
Yes, they were off of Morse on Karl Road. A store I had forgotten was Halls Hardware. Up until the mid seventies it was downtown across from the State House on High Street. The hobby shop was located in the basement. Eventually they closed and reopened as Halls Hobbies on the east side in the Berwick shopping center. That location closed several years later. I was into HO for years and the pickings were good at these shops. Now I do O scale two rail and am forced to purchase on line or at swap meets. I consider myself lucky that we have several swap meets in central Ohio, and two O Scale two rail meets within a three hour drive. Doug
