I'm having a tough time connecting the mth track. No amount of pressure seems to be able to get the plastic sections together. Sort of discouraging to use. Appreciate the help.

Hold the two track pieces at a 45 deg angle to one-another and push them together while simultaneously bringing them down flat. They will go right together.
ON EDIT: Trying to be more clear, hold the two track pieces together at 45 deg such that the railheads of the adjacent pieces are touching, (creating the base of the angle) and the open end of the angle is where the plastic bits are coming together.
Moisten the outsides of the protruding male plastic tips on ALL track pieces using a Q-Tip dabbed in vegetable oil (or any plastic-safe oil).
It makes a marked improvement for snapping the track sections together. Wearing some leather gloves also makes it easier on your hands while assembling the sections.

Like a "V" then push together and down at the same time so they're flat "_ _"
The old solid rail track is relatively easy, but the later hollow rail track is a bear. When mating old to new, I broke a few of the plastic tabs on the old track. Perhaps the plastic is getting brittle with age.
Just be careful not to pinch or twist the metal contacts out of position or shape. If you do damage the contacts they can simply be reconfigured with a pair of needle nose pliers.
The is a nice sized pad on each end of each piece of MTH Real track for soldering on inconspicuous feeder drops.
