I have a reservation in for a set of Santa Fe GGD aluminum passenger cars. I currently have a Lionel 21" UP set with the Railsounds diner. I think it adds another element to the consist. Do you fellow RR'ers think that I might be able to do this by ordering the proper parts from Lionel and placing them into the Diner Car coming from GGD? Would like to have an idea before I lose the ability to preorder the Lionel's incase I am "stuck like Chuck" and cannot make the conversion? Thoughts or advice welcome.

First step is to find out is if the Railsounds board you are considering is available.
If so, the installation will be the same as adding sound to a tender.
Just because Lionel puts their sound in a dining car is no reason to do the same. Using a baggage car will a allow larger and multiple speakers plus you won't have to remove interior detail or blank off windows.

Makes sense to install in a baggage car. My thought was to use the most up-to-date Railsounds components from Lionel. As long as it is pertinent to the Santa Fe consist. Most obvious right now would be the innards of the Railsounds dome car that is concluding in the 2019 Lionel catalog that Pre-orders are finishing.
Why not just buy a Lionel sound car and move the parts over then sell the car without the sound. Itll prolly cost you less

While Lionel is now selling electronics that they previously would not, AFAIK you still have to wait until the warranty is up on new items.

I think that will be my plan. I will do the Pre-Order on the Dome Car.
I installed the electronics from the Lionel TMCC El Capitan in my GGD El Cap diner. I put the electronics in the diner because I wanted the sounds to come from the middle of the train. I have found that putting the sounds right behind the engine drowns out the clickety-clak from the SS diner. Plus the cars were bilevel so I had plenty of room to work. I did not transplant the lionel trucks. I glued a magnet to the inside of a wheel and fabricated a bracket to hold the sensor. The project took a couple nights but I think it was worth the work.
I've even put them into MTH cars.
