Dcs remote does not function properly

Until he does, has this remote been rough handled? like slapped hard?

Try tethering the remote directly to the TIU's remote input using a 4 wire handset cord. Make sure you plug it into the correct TIU jack!

Power both up and tell us what it does. Press the read button!

What DCS version is in each unit? Have you followed the MTH troubleshooting tips?

I meant too ay the read button wasn't working wither. No it is only me who runs the trains. My iPad runs the trains fine, finds them, easily with no problems. So does that mean the remote is no good?

The transponder board inside the remote can come loose and then do things just like this.

Try the tether!

So I should pry open the remote casing and see if there is anything loose?

I'm assuming that if the trains run great on my iPad then the TIU is fine.

Well, the TIU is fine except it also has a wireless transponder board to talk with the remote.

I wouldn't open anything until I verify it with the tether. If it works fine tethered, then yes, open up the remote first. Press the transponder board fully back into place. There are posts here on the OGR about it.

sometimes the remote has issues because the thumbwheel mechanism is worn out, or is defective, unfortunately there are no spare parts available as they are considered obsolete, there making one last run and when that's done there will not be anymore made! I have had some success with cleaning the thumb wheel mechanism. but you have to be very careful as the remote can easily be damaged. I can possibly repair your remote if you would like!

Yes Alan, but.....

if you tether the remote and all the issues go away, it's not the thumbwheel. So that's a great way to start troubleshooting the issue. Most (older?) people have an old handset cord laying around already.

 If the issue remains after trying it tethered, we can go to the next step. I wouldn't want readers of this post to jump to step #2 and change the thumbwheel when all that's wrong is a loose board.

Thanks everyone, I took the remote apart easier than I though. It turned out that the circuit board popped out and had to be pushed back on. Remote works find now.
