Do the new Lionel Engines "Growl"?

Thankfully no.

I like that growl....

The new postwar remakes with AC "Pullmor" motors do.  Can motor ones don't though.

Chipset, I like the growl too.  I have a GP9 from '97 that I bought because it has a Pullmor motor.  My Spirit if the Center F3s from 2000 have them too.  I really enjoy running them.

My Conventional Classics Orbitor set certainly has the loud growling since, like others have stated, it has a Pullmor motor. Love the smell and sound.

My 'new'  1992 vintage SD-40 locos with Pullmore motors growl pretty good!  BUT....It's not a negative really. I bought them not knowing anything about them....other than they looked good and had an excellent price.  As I ran them the first time.....the motors almost made a good EMD prime mover sound!! They kinda growl like a worked hard power plant! It's a sound system that sould hold up well anyway!!!

Those early 2333's, 2344's, 2353's had such a growl, I call it the "Postwar sound system".

The older, early horizontal motors were the best "growlers"

My 2353's have a delightful growl, as do yours. My newer vintage LTI GN F's have more of a whine, and the PWC Texas Special F's have an excellent sound system, so the motor sound is drowned out.

I think the growl is the Pullmor motors with their AC magnetized windings.  I have an A-B F3 set with four Pullmors (the Santa Fe anniversary set from the 2000 catalog) and it is the loudest growler train I have - also the hungriest at used up to 60 watts when the two locos are running hard

 

David make the correct observation here in that it's not so much the PullMor motors themselves that produces the nicest 'growl' but it is the horizontal gearing with a spur running in concert that creates the sound. When the vertical PullMors appeared, they were relatively silent compared to their earlier horizontally mounted bretheren!

I agree! It seems they actually "rev up" as they get moving as opposed to just jack rabbit starting, and the associated sound, does indeed sound like a real diesel.

No artificial laboring here!

 

Oh....BTW, just bought a Post War 1950's 2343 AA set from ebay!

SOMEBODY STOP ME!

This was my dads Christmas present back in the fifties.  The new stuff is great but I love the growl and smell of this locomotive.  

 

This one runs more often then any of my other locomotives. 

 

 

Some of the loudest growlers for me are the little motorized units, they can be quite noisy.

If yer steam lokie is a growler, it's gone to the dogs, you need to put a doghouse on the tender.
