Does this locomotive look familiar to anyone?

Weaver?

My guess is either Weaver or MTH.    The construction with the stamped the chassis and china block ddrives looks like theirs.    And since it is a GP38, I am going to say Weaver would be my first guess.    I have not idea whose sound bouards they used for 3 rail stuff, or it could be after market  install.  

It could be a K-Line as well.  They offered a very nice GP38-2 just a few years prior to going out of business.

Weaver or K-Line.  MTH does not use TMCC electronics.  Weaver uses lots of that red wire.  The boards are factory.

I think Weaver is right now thinking about it. I converted it from 2 rail to 3 rail when I got it.

Now the trick will be finding parts before it's too late.

Unless the electronics were swapped out at some time, its a Weaver. They were the only one mentioned so far that used TAS SAW boards. Atlas and 3rd Rail also did but that doesn't look like typical Atlas construction.

P&D Hobby has some Weaver upgrade parts like trucks. Might be worth checking out.

It is definitely a Weaver. The side frames on the trucks are plastic and the truck blocks are die cast (as are the pilots). That one of my old SAW boards in there with an R2LC, RS 4.0 audio and power board! Recognize that anywhere!

That's exactly where the problems are. The plastic side frames have two screws that go into the top of the die cast blocks and the screw "holders" are splitting and cracked. I think the pieces that just push in are air cylinders and they are just hanging in there barely.

Great engine. Runs like a champ.

Mike Reagan has stated FOR SURE that this is a Weaver model. He should know...he made the boards inside.

Question to Mr. Reagan,

Is there a correct way for me to adjust the volume down some? I'd rather do it right if there is a right way. I like this loco too much to jury rig anything if it can be helped.

I got this one Mike....

Look along the edge of the board and locate a 3 prong connector with the center and one of the outside pins jumpered.  This sets the volume at max.  Remove the jumper and connect a 10K pot to the three prongs with the pot wiper in the center.  Now you have volume control.

For as nice as they made this unit, you'd think a volume control would have been there. But that's life. It really is a great engine other than that.

I'll run wires down by the speaker underneath and make it externally accessible someplace down there.
