The photo below shows the new Lionel Legacy E9s.  I got the UP version and both units come with what i understand are "snow shields" - the raised platform like covering above part of the roof vents front and back.  Other roadnames (Burlington, PRR) do not have these.  I both like them and appreciate the fact that Lionel does something besides change the paint on various roadnames so it tries to do some of the variations the different railroads did have in equipment. 

 

I have seen these snowshields or whatever they are in photos of UP E9s, so I know they were prototypical - at least on some locos.  

 

My question is, I am just curious if these were installed at the factory or was this the sort of thing left to the owner to have their shops do?
