It's definitely like night and day. I've done quite a few Cruise upgrades, and it's just as good as Proto2/3 engine's speed step control.

Depending on the engine in question, however, upgrading one to Cruise may be a bit more difficult. Make sure the R2LC board is a C08 or higher version, or else it won't communicate with the ERR Cruise board.

All can motors, no Odyssey.

E-6 Atlantic, Camelback, FT's, "Baby" Hudson, K-Line Scale Hudson, K-Line GG1.  All TMCC early 2000's stuff.

Getting back into the hobby after a a few years.  After seeing the "new" offerings, Legacy, etc. (and associated price tags), crawling speeds (compared to what I have), and synchronized smoke, I'm investigating upgrading my existing fleet.

I'm working on the install of a fan driven smoke unit, Super-Chuffer, Chuff-Generator, and just ordered an ERR Cruise Commander M for the E-6.  These and miscellaneous stuff, including shipping puts it over $200 for one loco.  BUT, if performance is as advertised, it will be worth it.

   

ERR Cruise Commander is always a step up when you have a DC-motored/non-cruise loco.

The sad part is that, had our locos been built with proper, adult gearing, cruise control would have been un-needed. So, for the lack of proper ratios in a set of $5.00 gears, we have hundred(s)-dollar boards. I am over-simplifying a bit, but only a bit, and I am not wrong.

If you've ever seen (I have a friend with one of these) a straight-DC O-scale layout running nice locos - no cruise, no electronics at all in the locos - it will make you weep. 3-rail scale/Hi-rail could have been so simple and cool.

In a prior life, I had N Scale trains.  The "new" locomotives being manufactured 20+ years ago were able to crawl, as well as hit Mach 1.  I had installed DCC with sound in a Con-Cor Hudson, and was amused by it.  Around that time, I saw the new offerings with TMCC and Railsounds and was completely impressed with the sounds and heft, switch to O and can't go back.

Looking forward to completing the E6 Atlantic upgrade.  Waiting for a few things in the mail and will hopefully complete next weekend.

Got the last CC and CC-M Hennings had in stock and am ready for more.  Above kind of explains why they're still out of stock.  Hopefully ERR isn't going BTO.

With a layout full of grades and curves, cruise gets a real workout here, and is much appreciated whenever a distraction tears me away from the remote.  It transformed a good running E6 into a decent hauler for it's size, not afraid to lug 6 or 7 heavyweights up 3% grades.  Makes tame, slow motion switching possible, if the couplers cooperate.
