We started off in 2011 with a 4x8 framed foam platform on the dining room table.
We doubled it in 2012, in the basement, with another 4x8 section and lots of operating accessories.
2013 saw a simplification of the trackage and accessory roster.
For 2014 the two sections were butted side to side to form an 8x8. We painted everything green and used tubular track and switches to emulate the dealer display layouts of the 40's and 50's.
This will be the last year that we'll use the sections but they've proven to be flexible and rather durable. They were easy to construct and can be moved by one person for storage, etc.

Thanks all.
Next year we'll probably go with something simple, on the floor, around the tree. I've been spending a lot of december days under a layout table.
I wired the original pretty carefully with buss lines, terminal strips, etc with the hopes of making the following years pretty much plug n play. Unfortunately, we never set it up the same way twice so most of the careful wiring wasn't reused.
We're planning some basement finishing later this year and the storage space needed for the two sections will be scarce during the work. so they'll probably get pitched.
However, we'll probably leave the current version in tact until March or April so we'll get to enjoy it for a while.
Mike
