I have a plan that I am going to modify i was wondering if i were to substitute an O36 switch with a 10" piece of track would it fit in its place?

No you need about 15 inches
Yes it is ten inches. Per the instructions for an 036 switch..."The switch can replace a straight ten-inch track
section or an O36 curve section. " . Right in the opening paragraph.

The 048 and larger will require 15 inches.
