I'm using an Atlas 072/054 Left Hand curved switch (Atlas P/N 6077) on my layout. It works perfectly, controlled by a DZ-2500 switch machine controlling a DZ-1008 relay, except for my MTH NYC Hudson engine. In fact, this engine is the reason I had to install the closure rail power...otherwise the engine would stall at the switch. No other engine does this, just the Hudson. I have the closure rail power fused with a 3A fast-blo fuse, but occasionally (every 5th pass), that fuse fails and blows. Should I increase the fuse size? and if so, to what? A 3A slo-blo? a 4A fast-blo? 

 

I don't want to cause an engine problem and I'm not sure what to do at this point. I have an MTH BNSF (PS3), an MTH Air Force (PS2), and an MTH Alco (PS2) engines that all pass through that switch without the closure rails powered.

 

Any ideas?

This is the first time I've heard of anyone fusing the wire to the closure rail.  I assume the fuse is between the DZ-1008 and the rail.  Can I ask why you are doing that?

 

The wires off the DZ-1008 to the closure rails are pretty small, but they seem to handle all my scale engines without problems.  Of my engines, the engine that pulled the most amps under load was a Weaver diesel; it pulled nearly 4 amps before I replaced the electronics.  I would think you would need at least a 5 amp fuse in this application to not have problems.  Always fast blow.
