General question on Atlas O engine about cruise control

Depending on the age of the model, early TMCC equipped Atlas models just had the simple "SAW Boards" for Lionel licensed TMCC. The "SAW Boards", for Sunset, Atlas, & Weaver, did not have cruise control. Later production Atlas models came with the Train America Studios "EOB Cruise Control" as part of the TMCC package. Current Atlas and Sunset/3rd Rail models have ERR Cruise Commander as part of the TMCC system.

I would think that if your owner manual does NOT state "EOB" (Engineer on Board) then it does not have cruise control.

Sometimes on the lower right of the cover of the owner's manual it will show the EOB logo.

Thanks for the quick response,  I do not see any EOB logo. As far as I could find on Atlas site this Loco is from the first run Atlas did in the Dash8s. I think the 1st run did not include EOB or the option to have it installed.  Thank you again Hot water and BREEZINUP for your response.  Nick T 

Open 'er up and post a photo of the electronics / flywheels.  Or if you can see the flywheels - is there a black and white striped tach strip on the flywheel?  If there is a striped tach strip it likely does have cruise.

-1 or -2 suffix dash 8 40Bs are SAW board. The owners manual has an EOB logo, if so equipped, and there should also be a switch on the locomotive somewhere that says "Conv. Cruise ---| OFF".

MTH does it optically with the stripes, thats not how EOB does the speed control. 

Andy B, thanks learned something new on why my MTH engines had the zebra colored wheels. The rear one is easy to see, will take the shell off tonight to look at the front one. 

Besides the usual on/ off for smoke and sound it does have a switch for run/ PGM. 

According to Atlas, the 6837-3 had cruise. However, apparently Atlas used the same number on the earlier 6837 except it was designated 6837-2. I'm quite sure the -2 didn't have cruise, because the catalog information for the -3 version says "Now with speed control technology." They also did later versions, even up to a -6, I believe, which I'm sure all included cruise. 

TAS EOB does in fact use a tach tape and optical sensor just like MTH. Your owners manual would have a section on tuning EOB if your engine had it. ERR cruise has no tach tape. If your engine has cruise it should start to move at the first blink on your Command Base or speed step 1 on your Legacy handheld. Non cruise engines normally take a few steps before it starts to move.

Your engine does not have cruise since there are no tach strips on the rear flywheel. 6837-2 is from 2001. There is no smoke unit either.

EOB and diesel exhaust units became standard on Atlas 3-rail locomotives sometime in 2004.

Atlas Also used standard Lionel Mother Boards with TMCC/RS and DCDR also.  If it had cruise there would be a Cruise on/off switch most likely.   G
