You just have to figure out what you are willing to pay, including shipping, taxes, and the buyer's premium, and place that bid.

From what I've seen, if you do that, chances are you WILL NOT win the item.  I've not seen any stellar deals for buyers at the end of these auctions.

For the Railrax in this auction, I think the only way you would do okay is if you could pick them up instead of having them shipped.

Has anyone done cost comparison between, Glenn Synder,  baseboard molding and culling straight cheap 1x4 boards from HD ?  Even at todays inflated wood prices, the 1 x 4 boards will win.  That will be real money for 500 linear feet of shelves.

Glad my shelves are already built.  I backed mine with 1/8 inch Masonite, and stood them on the floor with only two small screws holding them to the wall.  Grooves were routed in each shelf for train wheels and the shelves are 4 1/2 inches apart which allows the maximum number of shelves and while accommodating all locos and cars.  I painted them off white so the trains will show out better. They are movable to other rooms or houses which is what I did for 4 housing moves and made in two sections to allow movement through doors and up steps.

More shelves will not be needed as I will cull the trains on the shelves.

I understand that some have started with Glenn Synder or such and need to continue with that.

I called last week to order two or three lengths, got the bad news. I've used GS shelves for many years, often trimming a few inches to a foot off a length to fit a given situation. The scraps accumulated in a closet. This week I was able to collect enough scraps to create temporary shelving. For instance, it turns out two three inch scraps will hold any length car as long as you space them so each scrap is under the wheels...  It's only for a year...

Be very careful when using the aforementioned auction site. Yes, they do charge a 15% buyer's premium, but also inflate the packing and shipping charges. I recently placed the winning bid on an item that weighed under 3 pounds (shipping via PirateShip from their posted ZIP to mine less than $9) , would easily fit in a 22"x7"x7" box (less than $2.50 retail), packing materials (less than $1.50 retail), handling, AKA profit ($6.00). Their charge just over $32. You do the math.

I agree 100%.
