Yes, 'The Book' covers all that. I follow it for doing all this kind of stuff. My new 3rd edition print copy arrived in the mail yesterday.

 

As Barry said, you can replace the thumbwheel too, if that is the problem. I have replaced mine once already. You have to do a little soldering, but it wasn't that hard. The book also has instructions on opening the remote which I thought was the hardest part, that and putting it back together.

Schumann, the DCS loader program is necessary to do a backup, and when you select backup an/or restire from the menu, it gives you instructions on screen.  I strongly recommend backing up a remote even if you're not going to change it.  If only the thumbwheel is acting up, best bet is to replace it.  Remotes haven't noticeably changed since the oriignal issue, of which I still run one or two.
