I've done it several times. How I do it depends on what it is. If all I need to do is change the color of the seats, then disassemble, unscrew the whole interior and spraybomb it all.

Things like diners, where the tables are white and the chairs are not, I do it with a brush. Sometimes it can take a few coats to get the color even. The most challenging one was painting troop sleeper interiors, I actually went through the effort to paint the pullman green blankets with white sheets poking out the top.

You our can see in the photos I went for awoodlook, by adding grain lines. The grain lines are way oversided but you a see them. Many of these pics are from in process stages. Many imperfections are hidden once the shell is on.

Fantastic job but there's one question, which no one else has asked yet so I will. What are the small DC motors mounted above the interiors shown in all three photos copied above meant to operate? The mountings look far too big to fit inside the cars but the motors seem to be wired permanently in place. I'm intrigued!

P.S. Sorry if you have posted on this in another thread - I tried searching and could not find anything.

No motors. Those are the lights (stock lights of the car).

however, looking at the pics now I can see that they look like small motors. Thanks for the compliment!!

BigTruckPete:  The color is just "blue." These paints are actually poster paints for kids, they may have come from Michael's Craft store.

Thanks Bill!!! I'll see if I can raid my kids' paint supplies tomorrow and find that Crayola blue!!!

There are some great pictures of everyone's work piling up on this thread. I'm going to give this a shot this week. Thanks for the tips all.

I don't know if it's still made, but I got some sheets of printable fabric at WalMart years ago made by June Tailor, came in white and beige.  If you can find a rug pattern you like this material would be good for rugs.

I also used 2" wide cloth athletic tape in my Weaver N&W cars.  Sticks to the metal floor and then you can apply whatever color paint to it, gives it that carpet look.  I haven't put any seats, beds, or walls in them yet but when I do I guess I'll need to cut the tape so they will stick where I want them.
