Have you used "rivet decals"?

They are pretty cool.

I've yet to use them....but have seen them used.....looks like they work pretty well.

Yeah.  they work, but there are a lot of steps and more care than I expected is required.  I prefer other ways of making them (see below), but on some projects, particularly where I am adding rivets to a existing tender or car, etc., that I am only adding detail to, these seem to be the only option. 

 

When I scratch built and make my own.  right now I am making the tenders for the ATSF 6000 class loco: the bodies are actually 1/4 inch cabinet-grade plywood boxes, over which I am glue very thin (.03 to .01 inch) plastic sheet.  I cut each sheet to fit the side or around the boiler or whatever i will glue it to, then turn it over, and use a "ponce wheel; to make rivets: just pushing it down and rolling it along.  When I turn the piece over I have reasonable looking rivets.  I then glue the piece down.

 

 

I just used the ones made by Archer, the brand that originated this surface decal rivet. They work well and are easy to use assuming your able to manage normal decaling as a skill.

Just apply like a regular decal.  The only thing easier would be to have someone else do it for you.

 

 

Well, I use the micromark ones with the full kit they recommended a sealer and a base coat preparation, then a clear overcoat, all of which I use.  Without the sealer, mine do come off . . . 

 

For most applications I stick with my other method. 

 

Yes.  There was a rather lengthy discussion of them on the 2-rail section that very clearly visually demonstrated rather significant superior qualities to the Archer product.  I was just talking to a modeler that has used both this past Sun. and he fully concurred with that assessment and that he could easily see the differences in HO.

I can not find them on the Micro Scale web site. Could you post a stock number or tell me what section to look in?

Richard, I've never used the Micro-Mark website, but the stock number is 84987.  The catalog which came yesterday devotes nearly a whole page to the decals.  It seems once you buy something from them, you have a friend nearly for life.

 

I just browsed the website.  Go to Trains and accessories>More Model Railroad items.

These decals are made by Micro-Mark, not Micro Scale.

Used Archer rivets to repair damaged side on Intermountain refrigerator car, worked well, no issues. As with any decal, I use an Exacto knife, straight edge and piece of glass(as a cutting board) to trim the decal for application.
