There may still be some openings in the MTH Tech school the 3rd week of September.  Marty assisted me in getting an application for that "beginners" class as I start my education of MTH repairs - Thanks Marty!

Have fun Marty. I wish I was able to be there. But my girls start school school and work has gotten real busy since I talked to you last. Being in a small shop it's hard to get off. Any way have fun. I'll try for next year.

I have been there once for the class, PS 1 and 2, (5 and 3 volt), and second for some hands on repair experience. I have a good friend who goes down regularly, so I'd like to go down again. I don't get any practical experience with repairs here, as I don't have a full grasp on all aspects of repairs. My friend keeps saying he has this or that that needs repairs, but doesn't follow through. What little work he's given me was simple stuff. The most difficult task I did during the course was to replace a tach reader on a Railking Blue Comet. 

Unfortunately, the only chances I get to go down are holidays, such as Veterans Day or others that fall on a week day. Weather is sometimes an issue as well.

Don, when you do have a chance I am sure you will go.  All these schools are valuable and I enjoy them.  I had a member a few years ago send me a nasty email stating nobody can learn anything in only a few days.  He proceeded to tell me he has tools and knows how to fix old Lionel.  I was happy for him and his tools.

 

These schools not only teach good information but gives you special repair information that goes to servive people only.  Did I forget to mention a monster discount on parts.

Barry, I would NEVER call you an old guy.  "Sonny" would be much better.

Would this be open to just a user for bettering himself? I would like to attend as I upgrade all my other brands to PS.

I believe you have to be affiliated with a dealer or hobby shop. But then again, I could be wrong.

What's the best way to begin this credentialing process?  What do you have to be proficient in...before you can make one of these classes?

 

These old guys won't be around forever...how does one become a member of the new in-crowd to learn this information?

They want you to be hooked up with some thain shop.  You can call Jeff Strank and he will help you.

I'll use myself as an example; I am good friends with a dealer. we actually worked at the same school for a while, he's a teacher, I work in the maintenance department, but I have known him prior to our working together. He would often bring little projects to work on, as he worked with special needs students and they were interested in the trains he brought to school. He's also a long time friend of Mike Wolfe, and goes down quite often. I told him I would be interested in learning the repair aspect of the hobby, so he registered me for the class, and we went down for the then two day course, (not sure if it's still two days). Since I was not at all familiar with all the ins and outs of the remote control and electronics, the course was challenging for me. I did complete the course, but felt that I needed more experience, so I went down again with my friend to work with the repair guys for a day. I'd like to go down again, because at the time PS 3 was
relatively new, and only in HO. 
So if a novice like me can do it, anyone with the working knowledge of electronic trains should have no trouble. As was mentioned, give Jeff Strank a call, and he can fill you in on all the details
