recently picked up a like new 9308 in the box. my first venture in aquarium cars. tried to run the car today, no luck. a quick look inside shows the film is good, and the tension on the spools seems ok.

what caught my attention is that on one of the spools it appears something elastic was once wrapped around it. over the years it's now melted into just a pile that settled to the bottom of the spool. looks like it was some kind of elastic string or rubber type band to help the film grip the spool as it turned.

Anyone know about this? the parts book doesn't show this, wondering if it's something lionel added later, or was a custom fix.

either way, any help with getting the film to turn is appreciated!!

Mine's the late '90s command control car and is still working but I wonder how long. About what is the life of the film with the fish on it? Is this likely to be replaceable in a few more years?

I'm interested because the grandaughter loves this toy and wants to have it when the layout comes down in a couple years. I've tried to explain that it needs power and track to go with it, but she wants it anyway. I'd just hate for it to be totally inoperative down the road.
