Help with ps 2 engine that has been on the shelf for 5 years

Can you run it with just a transformer? (no TIU connected)

Post a model number.

If loco still in remote, delete it & try to re-add.  If not, try an add anyway.

Out of RF Range is typically not an engine issue. More likely, you have a problem with your DCS related to wiring or hardware defect.

You can get additional data points by:

1. Attempting to operate a different engine at the same spot on the layout. If it works, it's most likely a problem wit your 5-year old engine.
2. Tethering the remote to the TIU. If things improve, there's most likely a loose transceiver board in the TIU, remote or both.

That will narrow things down considerably.

As RJR states, knowing the MTH model number of the engine would be helpful.

Given the comment about the battery, I'm guessing this is a 5V PS/2 locomotive.  It's not that unusual for them to wake up dead from the shelf.

I agree with Joe... Does it do anything in conventional?    You may want to give the center rail rollers a spin with WD 40 by hand or with a dremel. (clean & lube)

That wouldn't account for the Out of RF Range error.

Barry, when the system can't change an address for example or gets an unexpected response from an engine, doesn't that trigger the "out of range" in the newer DCS releases?

Start at the basics.  Test conventional and prove the engine runs and has good shutdown sounds.  If so, do a conventional reset.  Than go back to DCS test with engine deleted from remote.  G
