Hey gang,

Is anyone else out there mesmerized by historic yard shots? They are a great resource for planning your fleet plus they enable you to accurately gauge needed weathering. Here are a bunch from my collection from the 40's through the 70's:

Provisio Yard 1943- notice how sooty the steam era was......

1yard [3)

Sunny Side Yard NY 1965- Notice the mix of new color and older steam era cars. This is my favorite look.

Sunnyside 1965

Allentown Yard in the mid 70's (lots of color) 1yard [2)

Here is an Sp yard in the mid 70's. Lots of lumber...looks like some wood chip cars over there? Maybe a sprinkling of steam era cars. Miss the SP and SSW

1 yard sp [3)

Here is an early 60's shot from the Rock Island Color guide.

1yard [7)

Early 70's on the BN out west somewhere...2yard1 [1)

How about the switch crew members checking the hand brakes, checking for any wheel chocks/skates, checking the brake pipe angle cocks, and checking to see if the coupler knuckls are open, prior to coupling up that string of cars.

No fair using actual reality and factual situations on OGR.

The first yard photo is a Jack Delano shot from the mid-Forties. If you search shorpy.com and the railroads sub-folder you will find a number of Delano's yard shots in color, showing amazingly weathered freight rolling stock; if you model the steam era it would appear that you cannot over-weather!

Here's another Delano photos, Galewood Yard 1943; boxcars at a freighthouse:

Many more of Jack Delano's photos can be seen at the Library of Congress website.
