Tuesday nights deep thought is this- Would anyone else be interested in rolling stock or an engine that has a mechanical breakdown feature? All jokes aside about the real failures of some of the products out there, I think this would be a pretty neat feature. The  only unit that I know currently available that has a mechanical breakdown feature is the hot box reefer by Lionel.  If you do not own one of these, I suggest you buy one. It is actually a pretty neat car, although the sounds are pretty annoying. 2 ideas I have are;

1. The busted knuckle box car

This could be made by using an electro- coupler that will randomly disconnect and then retract into or underneath the boxcar somehow. It would only be able to be reset after the boxcar had stopped moving.  This is similiar to how the hot box reefer works. Sounds and motion detection could all be hidden inside the boxcar. Should be plenty of space. On/off switch should also be included.

2. The blown turbo diesel with detachable damage panels

This one I think woul be really neat.  It's not going to shoot fire out the stack but it would be super cool if it did!!!! For this effect I am thinking its a randomly programmed feature where the diesel would be running normal when at some point random trouble sounds could be heard. If the engine is left in motion the sounds progress to the point where a loud bang is heard. The smoke unit could be programmed for optimum output at that time or even a secondary smoke unit activates to create tons of trouble smoke. The engine then powers down until the fire is put out. This again is a feature similiar to the hot box reefer. The interchangeable damage panels could be then placed on the body of the diesel. Attached are photos of Hasbro's 1987 gi joe cobra rattler jet that has interchangeable damage panels.

What do you guys think? We gotta give the fireman in the cab something to do right?

It's just a little dab of hot glue--just big enough to make some noise, but not enough to stop the wheelset from rolling. I have them on the inboard axle, and to represent "spotted" wheels, I put one on opposite locations of a single wheelset.

If you look at "Autorack Outtake" (it should be one of the suggested videos if you view this on YouTube) you can spot one of the 'modified' wheelsets as I'm backing the front end of the consist to hitch up the cars it left behind.

...on second thought, you probably could call that a "breakdown".

You're sure abusing that poor plant coming by.

It's been getting the "brush-off" since I built the loop in there. Funny though, those leaves aren't the ones that dry up and fall off--most likely they're the ones getting enough sunlight to keep the rest of the plant alive. It was one of the previous owners' plants they couldn't carry when they moved (found out later their moving van was 8000 pounds overweight), so I have no idea what species/how old it is, beyond "more than 15 years".

If you want some uncontrived breakdown challenges, get some old junk trains that need troubleshooting to resolved wheel and coupler and tracking problems. This is part of what I do in the hobby, then I have the satisfaction of achieving reliable operation with unique vintage trains that most people would not have spent the time to fix.

Heres some video ( not mine) of a breakdown b unit, breakdown sounds can be heard starting at about 3:20. I believe these emit smoke out of the grilles during "breakdown" too, not visible on this video:

thanks for the video - so it looks like most of the pieces im talking about are already in place just need to modernize it some.

A while ago, I suggested adding something random like a breakdown that can be triggered by the LCS sensor track:

Jon Z sort-of endorsed the idea, but so far nothing in the catalogues.  I still think it would be cool.  I didn't know about the "flat wheel" feature.  Since I don't have any Vision Line rolling stock yet, I'll have to use RailRide's approach.  Anything that adds variety and realism to an operating session is good!
