I find the longer BCW Trading Card Boxes are ideal for storing unboxed cars, and they take little more space than the car.  For many, I have stored the large OEM box and put them in these for more compact storage.  They come in various lengths, so you can customize the storage for the size of the cars and save space as well.

You can also get multi-item boxes in various sizes.

Just call them - the number is on the end of the box, shown in one of the photos.

What do they charge for those boxes?  I've also been looking for a better way to transport rolling stock to and from train shows, and these may fit the bill.

I had a carpenter friend of mine build a storage cabinet specifically to hold unused trains.  The cabinet is 48" wide, 34" high, including some small casters and 18" deep.  There are five shelves and each shelf is subdivided into 14 compartments by masonite dividers, wrapped on both sides with felt cloth.  So there are 70 individual compartment, each 18" deep and I can store 70 freight cars, small engines and some passenger cars.  The whole cabinet fits neatly under one area of my layout and rolls in and out for access.  Neat solution to overcrowding on the layout itself and everything is handy so that I can just take anything out of the cabinet and put it right on the layout.

Know what?  The cabinet is completely filled with rolling stock, the yards and sidings on the layout are jammed, there are at least 6 or 7 made up trains on the layout and I still don't have enough room for all the cars that I still use!  So I have been forced to  retain some of the original boxes for car storage.

One of these days, I've got to quit buying more rolling stock!

Have you ever seen an old Marklin tin plate set's, divided wooded box?

Or the display shelves at shows?

They look like a big briefcase closed?(HO & N use them more)

Any how... You set it down, open and/or slide off the door(s), and swing out a stabilizing foot or two, and your done. Built out of light wood, its seemed ideal to me.

Finding a safe foam to line its sides, would be a good idea. And sacrificial balsa under the wheels is another idea I liked.
