I replaced the 3 gears with a chain and 2 sprockets, 9 on top and 18 on the bottom:

How does the drive connect to the truck? Photos?

There are slotted nylon receptacles on the gear box and truck gearboxes connected by short brass horned ball driveshafts. I'd shoot you a pic, but it's all back together now.
