Of course these days it does not take much.....What is the difference between the Lionel TMCC lockon 6-14178 and 6-34120? What functions do they perform? I heard you can run conventional trains with them. Which one should buy? Any issues with these?
I am using postwar ZWs for power with TMCC and Legacy for control.

6-14178: Has a base that can clip right to "O" & "O-27" track - a-la "lockon".

6-34120: Not really a "lockon", the connections are made to terminals beneath.

Otherwise, they appear to be the same, electronically. The 14178 was discontinued around the time of Fastrack appearing.

The 14178 is only good for 135 watt 7.5a powerhouse. The later (current model) has 7.5a - 10a switch that allows use with the 7.5 OR 10 amp powerhouse. Hope that info helps! Mike Lionel
