I would have bought Barry's book sooner but .....

I didn't know it is was now available in hardcover for about $10 more plus shipping than the computer version.  I was dreading having take the file to an office store for printing and binding.

 

I received my book this morning in the mail.  It is super.  All the explanations are clear and concise.  I wish that I had it when I was installing DCS on my home layout a few year ago.

 

I am starting to install track and wiring on the G&O outdoor garden railroad.  I have mentioned the G&O on other posts on this forum.  I am hopeful that by using Barry's instructions we can get DCS operating well in an outdoor environment.  One big challenge is that as a club layout we need to operate conventional, DCS and TMCC engines.  

 

The club just purchased a new Z-4000 and a DCS system.  We eventually plan to get another Z-4000 so we can power all four TIU channels from a separate handle.

 

Looking through Barry's book, it appears that the best way to control conventional engines is to use the Z-4000 remote commander receiver using the "Z4K" tracks method.  I also know that MTH's most recent catalog has this item listed after it was unavailable for a long time.  

 

I went on the MTH website a few minutes ago.  The remote commander receiver isn't available yet.  Does anyone know when it it might become available?

 

The receiver range is listed as 30 feet.  Some of our operators may be 80 feet from the planned location of the receiver.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

 

I have attached a photo of the layout.  The layout is about 70 feet long.  The Z-4000 and other controls will reside in the shed that can be seen at the far end.  The O gauge loop is on the upper level with the G gauge loop below.  The white area to the left is the future location of the O gauge staging yard.  The O scale track that is shown in the photo was a temporary loop that has been removed.  We are using Atlas track.  

 

I will keep people posted on the G&O's progress.

...And will any copies be available at York?

Be on the lookout for an E-mail from MTH regarding an opportunity to preorder books for York pickup. Also, there may be dealers that will have some copies available for sale at the show.

 

I'll let everyone know if and when I know more regarding availability of The DCS O Gauge Companion at York.

I purchased the digital edition of DCS O Gauge Companion by Barry Broskowitz from mthtrains.com and I read it on my iPad.

 

It has become my go-to reference resource for all-things DCS -- and more.

 

Barry has also provide extensive information about incorporating TMCC and Legacy to make both the MTH and Lionel command control systems seamlessly coexist on our track layouts (including the operation of accessories).

 

The super-bonus in this book is that Barry also provides just about everything one needs to know about proper track-wiring techniques.

 

The digital edition offers another extra bonus: it is "searchable" using keywords. Talk about convenient!

 

DCS O Gauge Companion is THE must-have resource for everyone who operates an O Gauge (and/or HO) train layout. If you do not have a copy, I highly recommend that you add it to your reference library right away.

Where did you find out about the hard back edition of Barry's book?

Actually, it's not a "hard back" book, rather, it's a soft cover 8X10 edition. However, it is bound very nicely and has very readable print. The book has been available since its preorder "debut" at last April's York show

 

The content is identical, word-for-word and figure-for-figure, the same as the eBook. Unfortunately, margins are such that the only advertising that the print book has gotten is due to MTH's preorder-for-York-delivery E-mails and my efforts here on the forum. Regardless, the print book has done reasonably well, both in direct sales, as well as through my "dealer network".
