I put a Lionel LCRU and later a Electric RR TMCC unit inside the belly of an F3 with horizontal motors. I used a piece of K&S brass to make a plate to hold the unit and the Run/Program switch. The plate screwed into the holes for the horn relay assembly. You open the battery door to get at the switch. Then I installed an LCRX (probably a Mini-Commander could take its place) to handle the highlight and coil coupler in the dummy, and set both to the same address. I added a second set of rollers to the rear powered truck. I think the engine started as a 2333 with single motor, but I added a second one. Do not drop it on your toes.

The TMCC solution still works in conventional mode too. Not sure if the Electric RR unit has a way to open the coil coupler in conventional mode.
Mark, Did you complete this mod and how is it running?

I looked at some Williams boards and the Full Wave Bridge is a 6 amp unit, but the complementary power transistors were rated at 10amps (D44H11 and D45H11).

It would be an easy swap to replace the FWBR with an 8 amp unit if needed. Most of the Lio/MTH units have them, and they are avail at Radio Shack. The wiring was a good gauge and would handle it. You would want to add a heat sink to the Brige if you went this route. G

If the board is rated at 4 amps, sounds like they are using the similiar TIP transitors as on the Lionel 103 E-unit. Notorious for burning up when DC cans drew too much current.

Dale, I converted some AC Alco using the Rectifier method and a Lionel 103 E-unit meant for DC motors. It works, but it is not more efficient, and you do loose top end speed from the voltage drop.

Worth doing to replace a 2 position e-unit and more children friendly. G

You can use a Lionel 105-1 electronic E-unit to replace a 2 pos. 101 e-unit on AC motors. And you don't have to add anything.

Bob the bottom is the AC jumper for a horn/whst board.

The top plug is for slave motors if someone wants to power a dummy unit, bottom plug is for sound board.


Bob, Thanks. Do you know if it is power for the motors or just the signals for a slave board? G
