I'm sure this has been covered a million times but I could not find the help I needed in a search.  After two months of sitting idle, the layout was fired back up today.  All TMCC engines acted properly except one.  That one was my 6-11903 F3 A-B-A ACL from 1996.  The sound in the B unit was ragged starting up and shutting down, but fixed by re-seating a circuit board. The A unit, however, was a different story. It instantly starts up in conventional when I use the Cab1L to start to turn the voltage up to 18v on the ZW-L.  I put the darn thing in Program mode and when the power comes on the headlight lights, but "reassigning" the engine ID, or going through the steps to reset TMCC functions (Eng ID, Set, Engine ID, Aux 1 then 6 ) accomplishes nothing. It just sits there during programming and the headlight never blinks, so I assumed it's not getting any command signal. I verified antenna wire continuity from strip to the board thinking it may have been pinched or something previously, but it was okay. I don't know what to do next.  Any suggestion would be appreciated.

 

On the same subject, but two different questions.  You have to input the engine ID to do a TMCC reset.  What if you didn't know what an engine's ID was?  It would then be impossible to do a reset. Correct? 

 

The Lionel service drawings list a 610-8123-126 LCRU in the diesel.  The instructions to Restore TMCC Functions I followed are for an LCRU 2.  What's the difference between an LCRU and an LCRU 2?  Thanks.

It seems to start up in conventional but  how can we tell for sure?  Lower the voltage on the power supply and try the direction button. If it moves it's probably in conventional mode. Be prepared for a run away. (grab it)  If it doesn't move try giving it a new ID using the run/programming switch..

 

Don't forget the command base must be on before the engine gets power or exactly at the same time. I found you can't power up the engine and plug the command base in later. Doesn't work..... Good luck yeah I know, not much here.

If the engine program switch is set to RUN and the ZW-L to conventional, the diesel runs as expected. If the engine is in RUN and the ZW-L is turned off and set to Command and turned back on and the handle used to set the voltage is put at 18, the instant I turn the remote to get the track voltage up to 18, the engine starts to move in conventional mode.  It never recognizes any TMCC and runs like you would control a normal conventional locomotive remotely by varying the voltage.  

 

With the engine program switch in Program, the headlight lights up but nothing done to program or reset or anything has any effect.  I guess the LCRU is shot.
