Guys,

I know this is a popular question with some and unpopular with others. I'm still a York newbie after all of these years. Go easy on me!

Mike Maurice

ps. I'll be going looking to be razzle dazzled! Is there anything I should avoid? Is there anything I should spend more time with for example I am looking to build a multilevel (at least 3 level mountain for an Annual Holiday Show show.  So far I have gotten by with a separate level mountain that is easy to take down when doing 2 day shows. I am looking to build it but I have no skills is there a workshop that I could attend while there?

If there has ever been any kind of layout building workshop, or even layout visits, as

is common to many model railroad conventions, I have never heard of it.  The few

presentations are usually manufacturers for their products, and that has been slim

pickings lately.  As for looking forward to it...I am sure looking forward to the weather

improvement, but, since the internet auctions, it is no longer the only place you can find something you are looking for.  The chance of finding it there seems to be

reduced.  I keep hoping it will turn around, and if you haven't been, GO, for you will

see a few trains there.

Yes,avoid eating more than three funnel cakes a day.

Mike,I hope to see you there.

I always look forward to York. I am an operator not a collector, so I mostly attend to see what's new and for the entertainment and camaraderie. But I always find something I can’t live without.
This year the Carlisle antique car swap meet is the same weekend. My buddies and I will attend that on Saturday.
On Sunday we are planning to drive to New Freedom and ride behind the reproduction of the William H. Simpson #17. That is the locomotive that pulled Abraham Lincoln’s train to Gettysburg to deliver his famous address.
While you’re in that part of Pennsylvania, you can find many things to do. We always take an extra day to enjoy one of he attractions.

The only thing that you should avoid is spending all of your allotted spending $$$ as soon as you get in the doors.   The temptation will be great.

As for scenery, you should make a point to go to the Scenic Express booth in the Orange Hall and spend some time there.  They are great people (and forum sponsors), and they have just about anything you need to do scenery, including advice and probably how-to-videos.  There are also other scenery-oriented vendors in the Orange Hall (some do demonstrations), so plan to spend time there.  I would also check out the hall/dealer charts posted on the Eastern Division's web page to research other promising dealers (the charts do not change much from meet to meet).

You can also get building tips from some of the modular groups that set up, so don't forget to visit them.

Oh, and I start looking forward to the next York the moment I leave the fairgrounds...

Andy

Is anyone looking forward to York? I would say so!

This from a recent River City 3 Railers email I sent out.....

I usually leave at 0400 on the Thursday......getting through DC by 6AM and Balto around 0700-30.  In Hunt Valley Md, there is a Panera's where they usually have a fire going in the fireplace and I take a power nap.  I end up getting to the Fairgrounds between 9&10. There is usually a large group congregating outside of the Orange Hall and we visit till the opening bell.

Thursday night is the OGR Forum dinner/get-together at a new place since Friday's has been torn down.

I have already booked at the Hampton Inn Shrewsbury.....off I-83 just over the Mason-Dixon Line in southern York County

Friday AM has a choice of breakfast options.......Hampton Inn, Formal bkft with the LUG (Legacy Users Group) or an informal get-together with some of the members of the North Central High Railers (Baltimore and South Central PA group) and the Tinplate Trackers (DC,Balto, Annapolis, Northern VA group).  The last one has been my preference for the last few years and is a lot of fun. It's usually held at the Silver Dollar Diner

On Friday, I always go the OGR Forum Grandstand Mtg and leave around 5PM, getting to Baltimore/Catonsville around 6PM for dinner at the DoubleT Diner and then home......by that time the DC traffic has cleared out.  Usually arrive back in Richmond around 10 PM.....and start getting ready for October!

You following me Rich??  I'm going to Carlisle to pick up some parts for my GTO and was planning on hitting York on the flip, flop!!  LOL  Originally Posted by Richard E:

If that is indeed true, you National Capital Tracker folks need to really get the word out by posting a separate thread here promoting your participation.  Might even include a few teaser photos from prior displays to show the uninitiated what you have.

And, yes, I'm looking forward to York.

Don't hold back Don!

I remember you from the TCAMG, are you still a member? Stop by and say hello, I'm in the Orange Hall, not quite sure where I'll be yet. I've been in three different spots so far. I may be in Jack Rash's section, on the corner across from the entrance to Trainworld, or across from Trainworld again in the back room. Just look fro the coal load display.

Somebody posted some photos from York one time which did not go over well!

Joining the TCA does make it possible for you to attend York; it does NOT provide automatic admission (which must be paid for separately).

Once you are a TCA member, or even the membership itself, can be secured at York.  Admission to the event (the appropriate badge) can be obtained at the registration desk at the same time.  I don't recall the cost.

If you sent in your membership application yesterday, you should receive a response from the TCA well before the April York Meet.

TCA membership does not include York registration. When you receive membership confirmation, a York registration form may be included. Pre registration is $12, and $20 at the door. Register online: http//www.yorkregistration.org  or by phone: 1 814 928 0196. Advance registration must be postmarked by March 2 2014 if by mail, to receive the discount. Registration at the door can be done at the silver hall. It is a lot smoother then in years past, but there are still lines. If at all possible, register in advance.

Don

I was looking forward to it, that is until I read about Thursday at Friday's ending. To tell the truth, the past couple of years it has been more about the social aspects then the show itself. I only spend about 6 hours on Thursday at the show, even though I am up there Wed through Friday.  If there's no Thursday's at Fridays in April, I may just cancel my hotel and drive up for a couple of hours Thursday afternoon and save the using points for the hotel.
