Hello fellow switcher fans and welcome to Switcher Saturday March 16, 2024  St. Paddy's Day Edition!!!  It's our honor to welcome you aboard  If you love those little locomotives that do big things and serve as the backbone of any railroad then you are in the right place.  Switcher Saturday welcomes all gauges/scales  from N - G and 1:1 gauge/scale too.

My apology for not looking ahead and posting a request in last week's SwSat to show some green switchers this weekend in honor of St. Patrick's Day.    I know this is last minute ... however, since tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day I thought if you have some photos of green switchers handy please post a photo or two.   Of course if you're like me, and don't have any green switchers in your fleet, perhaps post your switcher pushing some green rolling stock.  AND of course,  if you prefer not to show some green no worries at all ... show us your wonderful switchers whatever color they may be ... because all switchers are beautiful!  AND we'd love to see yours!

Remember: There are two rules for participating:

1.  Be nice, have fun and enjoy yourself!

2. Post only photos that you have taken.

Posting copy written photos is an infringement upon copyright law.  If you do post a copy written photo, make sure you have the express written permission of the photo's owner.   Anyone posting copy written photos/content, without obtaining consent of the photo's owner,  is subject to legal action, and a possible hefty fine, plus  having OGR Forum privileges suspended permanently.   Please read the OGR Forum TOS ( Terms of Service ) to learn more about OGR copyright policy.

Please post your photos, videos, and information regarding switchers.  It's always exciting to see what everyone posts each week!  As always, I can't wait to see what content you all post this week too!  We learn so much from each other !

Have a terrific and safe weekend, wherever you may be!!  Green signals to all!!

Today on the Free State Junction Railway my closest St. Paddy's Day switcher is this Baltimore & Annapolis SW9.  ( With my color blindness this switcher may not have any green what so ever.  Someone once told me it had some green so I chose to show it based on what I was told ... LOL! )  Here she is basking in the afternoon sun.

Later B&A number 87 is shoving a green REA car after having set out the New Haven Dairy car. IMG_3578Earlier today, a Westside Lumber Shay has been carrying out switching assignments in the Patsburg Switching District.  Here the Shay heads out on a transfer run to West Yard.

New York Central SW1500 #9654 is an MTH Railking model (30-2217-1) with PS2 delivered in March 2001 at MSRP $249.95.

EMD produced 808 SW1500 locomotives between 1966 and 1974. They had a 12-cylinder, 645-series engine with 1500 horsepower.

Years ago, when I bought this model, I assumed that a New York Central SW1500 #9654 actually existed. However, New York Central System Diesel Locomotives (by William D. Edson – NYCS Chief Mechanical Engineer, H.L. Vail Jr. – NYCS Mechanical Engineer – Locomotive, and C. M. Smith – Trustee of NYCS Historical Society) doesn’t list any SW1500 diesels on the New York Central. The real NYC #9654 was an Alco S-2 diesel switcher with 1000 horsepower acquired in 1949 that was renumbered to #9654 in 1966. Although MTH later made models of Alco S-2 switchers, I don’t think they ever offered a model of New York Central’s Alco S-2 #9654.

Photos/videos show the model on my 12’-by-8’ layout. After 23 years, it still runs well (with a BCR). In my opinion, it’s a good-looking diesel locomotive – but it’s not prototypical.

Since my latest acquisitions aren't green, I thought I might bring a little corned BEEF to the St. Patrick's Day party:

This ABA BEEF set was acquired from Forum sponsor Trainz and they were NIB. The leading A and the B units are powered while the trailing A is unpowered with RMT's "horn sound" speaker and electronics. They share the exact same chassis as RMT's BEEP but with a surprisingly well-detailed shell including a number of separately-applied details. As with all of this type of loco I have acquired, they required mechanical "optimizing" to run to my satisfaction. I have also reworked the coupler mounts to "BEEF" them up considerably.

Happy St. Patrick's Day SWSAT, all!

In preparation for Saint Patrick’s Day, MAINE CENTRAL Alco S2 301 pulls a short consist including a Leprechaun and perhaps a car load of JAMESON Whiskey into town.

The Leprechaun is beginning his celebration early and hopes to find that elusive pot of gold THIS YEAR!

The Alco S2 and the Northeast steel caboose are MTH, the 40’ gondola is Weaver, the 1937 AAR boxcar is Atlas, the Leprechaun is PLAYMOBIL.

Greetings, fellow SwSat-ers. I hope you are all doing well. Here are two new acquisitions to my roster: a Postwar Lionel 6464-700 Santa Fe boxcar and 6437 Pennsy N5c caboose. Receiving today their first action at the hands (couplers?) of a classic  613 UP NW2. Pure beauty in motion!

The 6437 was a real bargain on Ebay, and the 6464 was expensive but fairly priced. Both are like new + and came in their original 1960s production boxes in pretty good but not perfect condition, too.

This past year, I find myself returning to my Postwar childhood roots and most of my purchases now come from that golden era. Back to basics, as it were. Happy, happy recollections.

Hello SwSaters,

Technically most Pennsy locomotives are green, painted with Dark Green Locomotive Enamel (DGLE).  However, some models, like K-Line's, are a little greener than others.

DSC_0001

DGLE is commonly thought to be 55 gallons black and 1 gallon green, or any number of other combinations.  Actually, it was black with a copper oxide additive. The copper oxide had a green tinge to it which supposedly got greener with age.

By the way, DGLE is NOT Brunswick green, which is less dark.

Thanks Ron, that’s the first definition I’ve had of DGLE.
