At the time these were around box cars were smaller anyway.  Used in the streets of Philadelphia and other small tight places.  

Weaver A5.

With a Rich Yoder GE 44 tonner.

With and early 2000 Lionel K4.   The K4 has gotten smaller, later offerings. Most recent Lionel K4 offering was the K-line molds (smaller).

The Lionel / K-Line A-5 is LARGER than scale (and larger than the Weaver A-5 which is a true scale model.)  It's a little bigger than postwar Lionel 0-4-0's like the 1656 (which was also larger than scale, BTW.)

It will look a little big next to "O27" LionChief Pacifics and Hudsons, but that wouldn't stop me from getting one if I wanted a steam switcher for a toy train layout.  -Ted

I can post a picture of a Lionel traditional 0-4-0 (like 1656) with my K-Line A5 tomorrow if you'd like, but I can tell you offhand that the K-Line A5 looks a little bit "big" pulling traditional sized freight, where my 1656 type of steam switchers look more appropriate sized.  

While you are waiting for that, here is a picture of my K-Line A5 and my Lionel B6 (6-18000 Pennsy 0-6-0 B6 Steam Switcher).    The B6 looks great with both traditional and scale freight, I love that engine.

Well seeing this thread had to unpack my K-Line by Lionel A5 (22103).  Was somewhat surprised that it is bigger than I recall.

Looking in the "Steam Locomotive" Cyclopedia-Volume 1 by Model Railroader they diagramed an A3 with engine at 24'-5".  But pictured an A5 captioned "... but PRR built some larger ones (see) photo as late as 1916.

Looking through "Pennsy Power(I) and "Pennsy Power III" could not find anything definitive except the A5 had larger cylinders and more traction force (30192 vs. 18866).

Although a little oversized still like to see it.  This one has TMCC.  Especially happy with this one is the fact that the headlight is the electric version as also the tender light.  Some I see they used the kerosene light with an electric tender light.  

 

edit, And oh yes the tender is way big.  Guess that is to fit the TMCC electronics.

Thanks! I really appreciate all the input. It's a great looking switcher, but I think I saw enough to decide against getting one, much to my surprise. I'm thinking it'll look out of place with my other engines and rolling stock. Length isn't the problem, but looks like height and width might be.

Think I'll add TMCC, cruise, and RS to my NW-2.  Might look for an RMT S-4 Bang.

Here's a shot showing the difference in size between a MTH A-5 and the new Lionel B-6.    The MTH A-5 in forefront is smaller and far more detailed then the B-6 behind.  But sound from the  B-6 makes up for it.   Although the A-5 is good The B-6 blows it away.
