I have a GG1 I bought on eBay.  Its in fine shape and seemed to run fine at first but has developed an issue.  Maybe I caused it, dunno.  When applying power in one direction there is a grinding sound and sometimes spinning wheels and stalling coming from the one main motor gearing.  It only happens in that one direction, in the other direction it sounds OK. When I examine the engine,  the main truck where it seems to be coming from, I can rotate the wheels by hand and there is a definite growl coming from the gearing.  On the other main truck I cannot rotate the wheels manually at all.

Any thoughts?

Yes. The truck may be loose - check the big screw in the middle, on the truck bottom - this can cause this. 

Also, the motor itself may be loose on the truck; had a Williams diesel do this. It would bind in one direction, run fine in the other. The motor was attached with 2 small screws, both loose. I tightened them (eliminating the gear misalignment in one direction due to the torque direction), and all was fine. You must remove the body (easy) to check the motor to truck frame attachment, assuming the K-line is built much like the Williams.

Thanks.  Found the screw!  After all that I took time to do necessary repairs and maintenance and now its running fine.  OK, what's next?   

One little trick you may wont to try in order to retrieve your screw is to take a small vacuum, like a stinger and vacuum all of your tracks with it. The vacuum may pick up your screw if it fell out on your railroad. Just remember to empty the vacuum, no need to be digging through a lot of old dirt.

Here's one to keep from digging in the dust bin, and vacuume the layout without worrying about accidentally sucking up scenery. Just cover the nozzle with a nylon.(hold it or it will end up in the machine, lol.) Slack allows more air flow, but holds things in the tube & stocking to retrieve after you shut the vacuume off.

Run the daylights out of it!  These K-Line GG1's are great runners, and look good pulling anything and everything you got.
