Kids and Trains

It doesn't get much better than that!  Instill some interest now and it's likely to return in later years.

Kids love trains!!! Without a doubt. 

I make sure my trains reciprocate: I always try to have some trains that love kids ready to run on my layout.

I bought my daughter her first train at 1.5 years old.  She loved watching me run my trains and would craw very fast to the room where I had them set-up when she heard me running them. Through out the years she helped me set-up my Christmas train layout.  Now that she is teenager, she always asks to run my trains with me. She has grown up fast.  Ken

One of the members of our Angels Gate Hi-Railers club has an autistic son.  Because of him and his fantastic family, other families with autistic children have heard about our club and have brought their sons and daughters to visit the layout.  Some are as young as 3 years and others in their teens.  These kids are terrific and love anything that has to do with motion and transportation .. trains,  boats, airplanes.  You name it.  Our members let the older kids run their trains and tears often flow when Mom or Dad say it is time to go.

But we embrace these great kids and thoroughly enjoy having them visit often.

Some of my kiddies at the RR Museum of PA RR Education hall.

Some of you might remember or even donated some items to my emotional/autistic support classroom last year as we worked on building a helix. It was tons of fun and the kids really enjoyed the entire experience. With that left over Lionel tubular track, cars, and buildings, the students will be working with Railroad in a Box (www.rrinabox.com) this summer to build another layout!!! All we need to get is tubular switches and the foam board. I am really looking forward to this project with the kids. A colleague and I will also begin the initial planning steps to build an outdoor layout in our school pond area. Until then, enjoy some pictures from last year's project!! 

Havin' fun in our top ranked Crappy Basement....

My almost 3 year old son loves his trains.  He loves going down in the basement and watching the trains go around and around on my layout. 

He also has a great Thomas train that is by far his favoriate toy.  Here is a shot of him this morning taking his animals for a ride behind Thomas.  

My 1 and a half year old gets in the fun also.  Here she is bring her big brother more trains.

We will head to the basement sometime today and run trains on the big layout.  For my sons 3rd birthday this May, I am building him his own l layout.  The table top will be reversible, with onside having a figure 8 of 3 rail O27 track to run his Lionel Thomas, and the table top can flip over to have a wooden track with wooden Thomas and friends on that side.
