We just received a Southern U30c that I won on eBay for a decent price (was the only bidder) and tested it at the club just now. The good news is that everything worked right out of the box!

The sounds are another matter. I may be expecting too much from all the positive comments and ravngs here on the Forum but the volume is low and there seems nothing 'special' that I can discern. We have several Legacyy steamers and I'm very pleased with ALL of them.

Our other Legacy diesel is the blue & yellow GP9 pair and I'm disappointed with them as well. So was the previous owner, yet in an earlier post, other owners raved about them.

It is a very nice looking model but I guess I was expecting more...

What am I missing?

FWIW I had one of the TMCC u30c's with railsounds 5.0, not terrible interesting in  the audio dept. I'm guessing your sounds are similar. I think these GE units  must be ho-hum prototypes as well, none of the unique sounds of an earlier diesel like an Alco or Baldwin. The same could be said for the geeps ,  just not a very exciting prototype "engine noise wise".

I think even the more interesting sounding diesels tend to thrum themselves into monotony once underway. Theres just no substitute for a good sounding steamer, model or prototype for that matter

Wow! Is this the latest Legacy version?  From you comments, apparently so.  Mine has the best diesel sound I have heard in any model diesel, period.  It is very loud (I run it at about 60% volume) and has tremendous depth - a lot of different sounds.  Also very dynamic, it changes with speed, etc.  I swear that when it is idling I can hear the valves or tappets clacking!  Maybe I'm just easy to please, but it sounds like we are talking about two very different locos here.

My wife wants to go out on a few errands now, so I'm tied up tonight.  In the morning I will try to capture the sound on a video (not sure it will work well enough) and post it here.

On a side note one thing I miss about the old TMCC control is that RPM levels ramp up  and down automatically on a  Legacy locomotive when the throttle is turned.

Legacy is capable of this, but to get it to respond and ramp up all of the levels I've had to find the "sweet spot" between the momentum and train brake settings.  My GP7 responds well to the momentum set at 5 and the train brake set about middle or just below.

Doublecheck your volume knob as well as the two volume settings via the remote Sam. Its probably still a "ho- hummer" though.

GE Universal and Dash 7 Series units emit a distinctive chugging sound when working under load. I've posted a video featuring D&H six axle GE units. The second runby features particularly crisp engine sounds:

It's too bad Lionel didn't build its Southern model in the proper high nose configuration:

Thanks for posting the video.  The second shot of the video looks like it might have been filmed near Slatington, just south of the New Jersey Zinc plant and below where the PA Turnpike built a new bridge on the NE Ext.

I'm still really new to Legacy operation so perhaps Im not doing something correctly heree. Our earlier TMCC U28c Warbonnet has a very nice full soundset (RS4) and puts this one to shame!

I tried to turn the volume knob all the way clockwise but it was already there. I turned it back and forth a few time to clean the pot to no avail. I believe I had the handset turned up all the way too.

Forgot to mention that this engine was New in the box and only the second 'new' one I've purchased. Am thankful that it started up and ran too. The other was a Mikado...

That was a neat video - especially the colorful consist with the blue B&M cars and the Cotton Belt bay window caboose!

Here are two videos I took of my U30C this morning.  It is running conventional on a ZW-L.  Volume is at about 50%.  I doubt these will help you much.  In person the sound is loud, and very complicated, but inthe videos it sounds much quieter and less impressive.  At idle it has a very industrial, "clackity diesel" sound.  As it starts to move and accelerates it does not have the booming resonance of a big diesel at low RPM and full load, but a more high-tech whooshing sound like turbos or something.  Pretty exciting anyway, and interesting, but I have no idea if it is authentic.  Anyway, best I can do . . .

C.Sam, if you or anyone from your club is at the TCA meet at the NC State Fairgrounds tomorrow (Sunday, Feb 17, Kerr Scott building) I'll be there from about 10:30 to noon or so (unless the predicted snow to the east of Raleigh hits it with more than a dusting).  Would look to meet you in person.
