Hi all, been a lurker for a little while now and this is my first post.

I started a year ago with the Lionel Polar Express Lionchief with my now 3yr old sun who just loves trains to no end.

I added a GN Lionchief + Mikado not too long ago and love running the trains on our small garage layout.

Because I have an unpredictable and addictive personality, I have now added some Legacy engines to the roster and also just received by 990 remote set.

I have not set it up yet but have briefed through the manual.

I currently have the layout set up wit the wall plug that comes with the lionchief set.

Can I just add the track wire to connect the Legacy base unit to my existing set up or do I have to get a transformer?

Thanks in advance to this wonderful forum.

I have been involved with all things RC my whole life. I am still into cars, jeeps, helicopters and planes and of course now added trains because you can control them with a cool remote control!!!

Welcome to the forum.

I am sure I will be corrected if I am wrong. I would be very careful as my understanding is the Lionchief wall wart is a DC supply.

I don't think the Legacy engines will like that at all. Might even damage them.

Better get a AC transformer or a Lionel Powerhouse. Lionchief is fine with running on AC so then you will be able to run both on the same track.

Do be aware that Legacy will not control Lionchief engines. Only the remote that comes with a Lionchief engine will do that.

Yes Bruce you are part right. You can take your Lionchief or Lionchief plus to a command layout and run it BUT you can't take your command engine to a Lionchief setup and run it WITHOUT an AC transformer. There is actually 2 reasons for this. One is the DC output of the Lionchief transformer and the other is the Lionchief transformer is only 42 watts I believe. Not enough power for the 2 engines.
