Hello all, I’m new here and new to O gauge trains. I’ve been searching quite a bit and don’t fully understand reverse loop wiring. I bought a newer train set earlier this year and have also bought a bunch of Menards track along with the fast track transition pieces. I recently bought two Lionel post war 022 switch tracks so that I can build a long track with a reverse loop at each end. I have a pretty good understanding of electricity and electronics but I can’t figure out, based on the original manual, exactly how to wire these for the automatic auto anti derailment feature. I plan to have an 18vac transformer dedicated for these two switches but have been searching for a simple wiring diagram. Can this be done without connecting the switch controllers? Can I use any 18vac transformer? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Matt

So just track voltage?  I have some test pieces put together with the insulator pins in the correct position. I’m metering 18v on the track but the controller lamp doesn’t light and the switch controller won’t move the switch. I also test the engine going through the return side of the switch but it still doesn’t make.  Again, I’m brand new at this so it’s probably something simple.  I’ve tried to find YouTube videos but can’t seem to find videos on basic wiring/setup.

Take the cover off the switch machine.  There is a pin where one can apply aux voltage.  This metal pin is where one can connect a "fixed voltage plug".  When the plug is not being used there is a piece of metal that bends and touches the pin applying track power to the switch.  When the fixed voltage plug is in it disconnects this piece of metal from the pin.   Sometimes this is bent so that it is not touching the pin when the plug is not in, preventing track power from powering the switch.

I was able to set up a test track with both switches and both loops.  I discovered that both metal pieces for the fixed voltage were bent and not making contact.  I put a wedge in each one so that they would make contact and both are now working.  Thanks for the help!  That would’ve taken me a while to figure out, especially with both having the same problem.
