Lionel 2015 Volume 1 Predictions

I predict that it will be full of trains and a bunch of them will be from previous catalogs

They will have to put the PS-5 gondolas back in the catalog, due to production delays.

Lionel will attempt to join the 44t "band wagon" and take 2+years in doing so. A p.e. scale combo car may be added for Christmas catalog for 2015.

PRR T1 4-4-4-4 vision line and UP FEF 4-8-4 --they are remaking the old engines--dont expect anything new

After reading the Collectors Gallery in run 276, I think we're well overdue for a Legacy

0-6-0 B6 switcher.

I figure after Lionel used this year to release the 10th anniversary addition of the Polar Express, they'll release an upgrade to the product line in the form of a Polar Express LionChief + Engine and tender. Hopefully with the same sound sets available in the 10th anniversary addition.

We keep buying the upgrades no reason to stop now.

Looking for a Vision Line or at least Legacy J3a Hudson. Now that I'm broke...I'm sure they will do it!!! LOL.

With the success of Lion-ChiefPlus( I had a good feeling about it) I hope to see some more steamers as well as some F-3's.

And, I predict that: I will say beforehand (as now) that there is little I can imagine I want that much, but that I will see some stuff in there I have to have and blow the whole planned train budget right there.  

 

K-Line made an awesome 4-6-6 tank engine years ago.  Someone - I have no idea who -  has the castings and all for it.  I would love to see a Legacy version of that.  Mine is getting really really old, obsolete, and worn out. 

I would be very interested in the Boston and Albany 4-6-6 tank steamer if they made the correct passenger coaches to go with it.  Which is why I passed on the K Line version several years ago.  

LionChief Plus PRR Baby K-4.  This would fall right in line with the previous Hudson and Pacific tooling used.

Don't know what became of the light Mountain engine produced in the early 2000's. Would love to see a Rutland version. Anything Rutland. Perhaps a 10 Wheeler.

I predict there will be gripes and groans! Too much of this, not enough of that. Pretty much like every catalog! 

Speaking of... a LionChief Plus RS-3 in Rutland, with an Operating Milk Car, 6464-type boxcar, flat with marble slabs, and a NYC-type woodsided caboose would make a great set!

I'm hoping that we will see some more modern Lionchief Plus diesels. I'm hoping to see maybe an SD40 or GP 38 in CN or CP. They could certainly resurrect the Lionmaster SD90 tooling and release those as Lionchief Plus engines with some new roadnames. 

 

On the steam side I would love to see a new version of the Reading Crusader!!

It's an eye catcher of a steamer!! Would look really nice on the layout!!

 

There is a new President at the helm and this is probably the 1st new catalog that his team has an opportunity to put their handprint fully on. So I do predict something new and not all rehash from prior years. They will want to make a statement. And judging from the success of the Vision Line BB and other top end products they achieved at the end of 2014, I am reasonable optimistic for something new.

 

 

Need a legacy genesis. And more Amtrak items.  Would love to see not only Amtrak engins and cars but also stations that say Amtrak

And of course, more sports themed and fantasy sets that just require different decals and painting.

If anything different comes out it will either be BTO and/or cost over $1200.

At best, we might...might get more LionChief engines added that are not just additional road names to what is already out there, i.e. repaint and decal.

Also, anything requiring new tooling will take 2+ years to arrive.

Still waiting for Neil Young Signature Series passenger cars.

How long does it take to make a passenger car?

 

I'm still hoping for a Lionchief Plus Reading and Northern 425 (with the maroon Reading and Northern Passenger cars). I mean, it's a Pacific. They could do a lot of different engines with that tooling.

One can only hope. I believe Lionel has "legacy rehashed" nearly every loco offered in the last 12 -14 years except the J3a....... and theres always that Niagara, that could be redone, WITHOUT all of the defects.

A re-cataloging of the Smoke Fluid Loader, since it's getting close to ready for delivery (wishful thinking for this 2011 order - though I will agree it's better to be delayed than defective).

 

A Walt Disney Carolwood Pacific set, possibly re-igniting the Heritage Series. (i.e, BFOC, John Bull, Stourbridge Lion, Dewitt Clinton and Lincoln Funeral train style)  Legacy would be cool, but possibly too hard to fit in if the engine is to be scale.

Don't be surprised to see an $1199 MSRP on it, just to push the price envelope again. Afterall, Lionel's gotta keep pace with their inflated MSRP's.    The Lionel JLC versions carried an $899 price-tag, but that was quite awhile ago.

 

MTH has held the $899 price-point with their recent GG-1's, but the street price is often much less.  MB Klein just had a SUPER sale on MTH locomotives around Christmastime, and I snagged a scale GG1 for $550.

I think that's a pretty prudent move on their part.  They already have the Y6b due out in mid-year which should anchor down the $1400-$1500 price-point quite nicely.  Although there seemed to be no shortage of BB orders at $2K, I don't think the market would absorb another Lionel $2K locomotive so soon -- especially on the heels of the Y6b's street price, which seriously dilutes the Vision Line value proposition.

I'd like to see a high-end scale UP "Big Blow" Gas Turbine.

 

I'd also like to see some more scale tank cars (33K LPG tankers).

 

 

My prediction is that anything that strikes my fancy will cost more than I'm willing to spend unless there's a fire ball on it.

Agreed, they did the Lionchief PRR  Mikado, now if they would only get the headlight placement right.......

Only this time they will have pricing that we can all complain very loudly about, then go ahead and ante up anyway to be certain to get the ones we want.

"Yes" to a Carolwood Pacific. And how about a Disneyland RR General passenger set? With a Lily Belle caboose, of course.

 

I predict everything will be scale only and only run on O72 curves and have lots of fantasy paint schemes like a Daylighter Big Boy, Daylighter scale GG1, and Lionchief remote control freight cars along with a large tablet to hold of your Lionchief remote to run everything at one time.....

I don't care what they bring out as long as they revive and expand the OO line.

That's why I'm worried!

 

Of course, there'll be two versions: grey or black..

I was thinking I should create a new business model for Lionel-I PAY Lionel NOT to produce a locomotive I want.

RickO - I'm with you, pretty much, on the J3a/Niagara sentiments (though "enough

Mohawks"? Not until Lionel does a can-motored, modern version if the L3 or L4).

 

- the de-bugged Niagara (I have one of the older ones) would be purchased by me, almost

  certainly ("almost" only if circumstances just prevented it).

 

- the Legacy J3a Hudson (unstreamlined) is another issue:

  - if the loco is merely upgraded electronically I would have no intention of buying it.

    I'd love it, but my TMCC versions (more than 1) are so good that I would not feel the

    need to buy the new one. (I've even added shorter drawbars.)

  - if, however, they offer the J3a in it's later (the real loco) iteration (PT tender;

    Worthington SA FWH instead of the Elesco; re-positioned power reverse/running board; modern Gothic lettering style),

    then I'm i big trouble. I actually prefer the earlier (real) J3a a bit, but only a bit,

    so I would want the later version.

  

How about just doing some new roadnames in the GP9 or 35s that have Legacy.

Quick Casey, I too would like to see them expand the OO gauge line.  This would be something unique to the train community.

Lionel has been good to me here. They make very little in my road name. I need to do this with MTH, they have my number and are killing me, well my budget anyway!

I predict there won't be anything I want, except they might do a Milwaukee Road USRA Heavy Mikado because they already have the tooling, it's just a paint job, and the Milwaukee had a hundred of them. Of course, all those reasons don't mean it will actually occur to Lionel to make the engine.

That would be neat, but I would also enjoy it if they included this:

 

(Until I saw it while visiting, I did not know they ever ran a traditional caboose other than the Lilly Belle at DL)

 

I'm thinking the CP is more likely though.  Maybe not this catalog, but probably sometime in the next year or two.  I could be wrong (but then again, maybe I am on to something).

You can bet that there will be plenty of re-issues with prices that are $20 dollars higher than they were in the catalog from two years ago.  I bought a coaling tower for $150, then saw it in the next year's catalogue for $170.  What's up with that?

Because nobody knows (those that do ain't talkin'.)  "What will" and "wish they" are essentially the same thing at this point in time.

 

Besides, a "wish" could come true and a "prediction" fall flat on it's face or vice-versa.

Brilliant. Then why not forgo the pretense of "what" and simply go straight to "wish".

Plenty of New and Old operating accessories in Plug and Play mode. Instead of the P&P track why didn't they make a P&P SC2 type activation where you could plug in to an SC2

and still work them from your controller.

Prediction:

They will have a series SEABOARD COAST LINE Traditional O gauge freight cars made: open-top hopper, covered hopper, gondola, waffle-side boxcar, flat car with bulkheads.

 

If not, they will just repeat railroad names on the traditional freight cars.

OK, I'll bite.

 

Since they have announced that the Gantry Crane will be coming with TMCC capabilities, how about a Mi-Jack Container Lift with TMCC?!!! Talk about an easy home run. The used ones sell real quick when they pop up even if they are broken just so folks can use them as static displays. Just imagine if you could fire it up remotely! I have to stop now, I'm working myself into a frenzy!!! 

 

Also would like to see CN Autorack in all YELLOW paint.
