how to remove collector plate on a lionel 685

Very carefully.... they can get brittle so bending the ends to get them out of the slots usually cracks them. The center slots are pried from the frame, but it usually boogers up the plate a bit. Why does it need to be removed? Pickup wire detached? Removing the e-unit may provide enough access to resolder the connection.
There are special purpose frame spreaders out there such as this one, but I would try to avoid removing the collector plate if at all possible.
Jeff Kane at Toy Train Tender sells the frame spreader, which is the tool I use to take collector plates off, ONLY when absolutely necessary to do so.

I have one of those. I guess I must not know how to use it, because it does not work for me.
Any tips?
