I have several operating accessories that use coal.  97 Coal Elevator, 397 Coal Loader, 497 Coal Loader, 456 Coal ramp and an MTH American Flyer reproduction Coal Crane/Loader.

It's been such a long time since my last operating layout that I forget which type of coal to use that will work in these accessories.

There are several items on Evilbay such as Scenic Reality-Products For Scenic Success scale coal #2040 egg coal along with "vintage" bags of Lionel coal.

Would anyone have thoughts on which type works best all around.

Use Lionel's postwar coal. The pieces are more consistent in size, and have rounded edges like they were processed through sieves and tumblers. By contrast, Lionel's modern era coal has a wide variety of sizes, and have sharp, jagged pieces. Some are so small, they jam up coaling accessories like the belt on the 397 conveyor loader. The modern era coal just looks like someone put broken plastic bodies in a blender, then dumped them in a cloth bag.
