It has been discussed here that Lionel mistakenly has the J3a Hudson chuffing at a rate of 5 chuffs per revolution instead of 4 chuffs. My question is can this effect the speed read out on the Legacy controller? If running this locomotive on the same loop with other Legacy locomotives at the same speed setting, should they be, in fact, running at the same speed and maintaining their distance?

My gut feeling is that the chuff rate shouldn't effect the speed or the read out on the controller. Am I right?

Thanks in advance for your help.

one does not effect the other that I know of.   Your Hudson should track your other engines no problem.

Now Lionel will fix the chuff issue for free.  All you need to to do is take the shell off the engine and unplug the RCMC board.  Call Lionel for a return number and send it in.  Lionel will reprogram the board for you and send it back.

Interestingly enough, whatever math Lionel used to resolve the wheel speed is correct, but the chuff division was off. My J3a’s speed tracks perfectly with my other Legacy steam. It just likes to throw an extra chuff around.

Thanks Norm!  I don't mind the extra chuff at all. I was more concerned about the relative speed. As long as that is correct I'm good to go.
