Hi Folks,  

 

The sound system on my Lionel N&W Class A stopped working.  The Lionel number is 6-28052.  The engine has TMCC and is probably about 2003 vintage.

 

I connected the tender to another Lionel TMCC engine.  The N&W tender sound system works perfectly when connected to this engine using TMCC.

 

The Class A runs just fine in TMCC mode in forward in reverse.  Therefore, I believe the problem is that the TMCC signal is not being transmitted from the engine, through the wireless drawbar, to the tender.  

 

I want to take the boiler off the engine frame to see if there is a pinched wire or loose circuit board etc.  Hopefully I don't have an electronic problem with the wireless tether or another circuit.  Electronic problems are beyond my capability to fix.    

 

 I removed the two screws under the cab and the two screws that are inset deep inside the center piston frame.  I also disconnected the piping to the front between the boiler and the front piston frame.  

 

I can't find any more screws that appear to the hold the frame to the engine.  The rear frame is loose all the way up to the center piston frame and the front is also loose.  I can't get the center gear box to drop out of the boiler casting.    

 

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in another direction so I can get the boiler separated from the frame.

Since no one has offered any advice (has no one disassembled one here?), I rolled mine over on its back to take a look. I'm not going to take my loco apart for you, but I saw

nothing that would hold the gearbox in once the screws you mention were removed.

I've taken a lot of locos apart, and sometimes screws don't get mentioned in the 

instruction booklets (Lionel's Hidden Screws Niagara, for example); I presume that you have looked at the book?

 

Anyway, email Lionel from their website; I have asked questions before and have received a reply pretty quickly. There are manuals available there, also.

 

Is it just a tight fit? Maybe a little judicious pulling/prying (with wood) over a soft surface?

(Bed!) Maybe?

 

Lionel can fix it, of course. Not free, but neither was the loco, I presume.

There is a plate with a slot attached to the boiler and a hook with a bearing washer and spring that engages the slot to "hang" the front driver assembly and allow it to pivot. If you center the front drivers and move them back towards the cab, the hook will disengage and allow the drivers to be released and the front drive shaft will disengage. There may be a couple of electrical plugs that need to be disconnected from the classification lights and headlight. The rear most driver set will have an antenna wire connected by a wirenut to the handrail antennas, and a cab light that fits in a rubber grommet.
