A friend of mine bought the Lionel Paul Revere set and recently his locomotive was not working. I visited him, put the traditional GP 9 on the track and the motor was not engaging the drive. Upon closer examination, I noticed the center drive shaft was missing the center gear! How can I replace this important gear? How would I go about obtaining it?

any help is much appreciated.

we scoured the layout and surrounding areas for this lost gear to no avail.

thank you.

Did you try Lionel parts?

Timko Repair may have the gear too.

Lionel lists the gear assembly as "obsolete".  Its no wonder. These trucks look el cheapo the way the gears are a plastic assembly separate from the truck.

Maybe someone knows of a replacement truck that could be substituted. I suppose you could try contacting Lionel  but you'd have to get someone who really knows the product line.

@Chuck Sartor I think the correct part number is 8010-116. The 8010-117 is the pinion gear (2 required) that mates up with the missing drive gear. Train Tender has both, as do other vendors.

And @Leroof, one more thing before you place an order for only that part - you might want to clean the grease off the two pinion gears (8010-117) that mesh with the missing drive gear, and give them a good visual check. From what little I can see in the picture, one or two teeth on the pinion gears look kinda wonky. If I had to guess "what happened", my guess would be that a piece of something (ballast is often a culprit) got between the teeth on the drive gear and the pinion gears - that would be enough to crack one or more of them, and certainly enough to chip a tooth or two.

The drive gear is a press fit, and I believe will require the removal of one or both truck sides to properly press a new one on. However, since the drive gear is plastic (or Delrin or whatever), you might be able to find a way to squeeze a new one on without removing any truck sides. It will depend a lot on how 'sloppy' the fit is on all parts concerned, including the truck sides. I believe there will be very little clearance between the drive gear and the truck side, so getting a tool in there to squeeze a new gear on would be quite 'iffy.' I have repaired a few of these motors (or similar) and ended up removing both truck sides and two of the four wheels to get new drive and pinion gears in place.

Thanks Chuck – it appears I was looking at a postwar GP-9, cab number #2359 with a Pullmor motor. I see now that this engine is a much newer DC motor powered unit, cab number #2346, or at least I think that’s what it is. LeRoof, can you confirm the cab number please?.

This unit does indeed have an easily accessible drive gear assembly as Chuck said, viewable on this page.

Item #21 (630-8502-078) is the part number of the complete gear shaft assembly, and has been mentioned before, is no longer available. The gear you need is part of this assembly, and Lionel doesn’t seem to list the part number of the gear alone. So I will defer to others who have actual hands-on time with this unit to provide that information. My apologies for adding to the confusion.

No, I am correct. You want the pinion gear. Tap on with a ball peen hammer No part removal necessary. (Other than removing 1 truck plate screw.)

If Chuck has had success with the -117 gear, that would be the way to go as it appears the original replacement part, number 630-8502-078 assembly, has been long unavailable as per looking through prior posts on this same subject.

Just to satisfy my curiosity,  Possible alternative Gear info needed?

how many teeth? Center hole measurement? Thickness?

my friend thinks this locomotive is too nice to retire to a shelf queen status. I agree. Thank you for your collective help.

I will follow up on his loco rehab adventure!

Since Henning's Trains has 21 of the gear that Chuck mentioned as a fix, why waste time looking for alternatives?

Lionel - 600-8010-117 Pinion Gear

step one Find new gears!

step two waste an hour trying to place gear on shaft with truck on (lol)

step three remove a few screws. Take truck off and disassemble truck.

step four place replacement gear and gently tap it on in place.

step five reassemble all.
mission accomplished.

thanks for all the help.

mission accomplished.
