Is it me, or are the bell, whistle, and popoffs painted gold instead of being brass?

I can’t tell if they are painted or just unpolished brass.  The underside of the bell has a steel core (for the magnetic swing).  Only way to tell is try to scrape it to see if paint comes off, but I won’t be trying that, haha

Here is a short video of my Bellefonte Central that arrived today from Charles Ro. Since I live in Bellefonte I had to have one. I did find a screw with a very stripped head in the box (picture below). Turns out it came from the bottom of the steam chest. I don't know if the threads are stripped on the casting, but I 'll call Lionel on Friday and see if they will just send me a replacement screw to try. I wish they didn't let them use power screw drivers at the factory.

One thing I like about your model is the back of the tender is painted black and not red like mine.  The Red in the tender and Cab roof are so far off from each other, it sticks out.  I wish they would of just painted the whole tender black on the PRSL ones.

Heres a thread on the PRR E6's released this year with the same color discrepancy.

Apparently its "prototypical".Lionel E6 Color Off?

  Prior to these E6's and the H10 the Lionel  PRR cab/tender reds always matched the darker red of the cab roof.  FWIW, this is true for MTH as well.

I just can't see Lionel "going out of their way" to model 2 different shades of red for accuracy while at the same time painting the smokebox silver instead of the correct graphite color. 

The lighter red matches the tender deck of the GN e6. I wonder if all of the tenders for the E6's and H10's were painted at the same time with the same red.

 

On a side note. It also appears  that the cab has no windows. Can you confirm Sean?

I guess it wouldn't be a big suprise as the TMCC version didn't have any, but it wouldn't have been a big deal to add them. It also mentions "cab glass" in the catalog description....for what thats worth.

You are correct there is NO glass in the cab windows.

Mine came in today. It’s a gem. The sound is strong, the steam and whistle are robust, the operation is smooth, and the lighting is pretty. Minor quibbles are that there is no window glass, the smoke box is colored light, the “brass parts” such as the whistle and bell are painted gold, and the first speed step up is not as slow speed as some of my other Legacy engines.  Still, this is a winner!

As compared to what regarding the Whistle and bell being painted gold?

IF these parts were brass, you couldn't have the "swinging Bell" mechanism with using magnets.

If the bell was brass, it would "mismatch the color of the bell.

Wondering if this silver is the same paint color used incorrectly by the factory on Lionel’s recently released wabash and was it ?mopac? diesels?

The VL hudson, CC2, 2-10-10-2, and the recent S1  electric have MUCH nicer looking brass detail.

Actually you could as all the swinging bells have a steal core in them.  My CC2 has a brass swinging bell (at least it looks like it because it is polished.  If you turn the bell upside down, you can see the steel core.  So I am not saying it is brass because it looks painted but technically it could be.  My guess is it is pot metal with the steel core on these.

I guess these are all the things Lionel did to get this loco to come in at the low price point. 

I'm not sure if I should break the seal on mine or just sell it. I took a chance and preordered this one. Never again.

Anyone know if the Western Allegany version is painted with the two different reds on the roof of the engine and the back of the tender?

For the price I think it worth it to keep it and run it.  Most of these things are quite minor.  No ones really going to notice the gold paint.

Yea I picked this engine up yesterday.. Sounds and smoke are very good, actually better then I expected.  The tender is actually better detailed then the engine (treads on walkways) and finer details.  Engine has no cab window glass (catalog said it should) & smooth walkways really separates it from the tender.  On the plus side engine runs slow and smooth but headlight remains on when in reverse? That no cost feature we take for granted is a given was implemented 20 years ago.    I guess its hard to complain with all the added features and low price of this engine even with the screwed up silver boiler front..

Anyone who's counting rivets is gonna paint it or weather it anyway 

No one is picking on anything.  Just reviews and comments.  Honestly no one will ever notice the bell is painted gold or no window glass, etc.  This engine is one of the Best Values for Features legacy engine made.

It is a winner.

Mark, that looks great.    Did you tape off the black details like the piping or remove them to apply painting?     Please share cause I am going to copy your moves!!!!
