Hello and Greetings to All,

Hope every one had a wonderful holiday!

Just as a FYI I decided to purchase the new Polar Express Scale Caboose # 6-81811. It looks Great! However there is a But... While reviewing the instructions I notice the disclaimer about the Scale Smoke Stack, well I looked for mine and there was none packaged in the box? I contacted Lionel Warranty and I found not only was I missing the smoke stack but I was also missing the "Air Hoses" it was packaged with. I asked if the Air Hoses were intended for scale couplers only and could not get a direct answer, I guess I will find out when I get mine. I was wondering if anyone ordered the N5b Caboose, I am curious to know if "Scale" couplers were to be packaged with it as well? I received the Screws for mounting the Scale Couplers but no Couplers?  If  you have the N5b Caboose you may want to check your packaging to see what you have!

Thanks, Ryan

I found the following on the Lionel web site. Says nothing about being supplied with scale couplers, only that it does have the mounting pads for them.

Features:

  • All-new tooling
  • 1:48 Scale
  • Die-cast metal trucks with operating couplers
  • Frame includes pads for Kadee® coupler mounting, for easy conversion to scale couplers
  • Accurately reproduced side frames, specific to the prototype
  • Era-specific details
  • Durable plastic body with metal frame and handrails
  • Constant voltage smoke unit with ON/ OFF switch
  • Brakeman figure in cupola
  • Interior LED lighting with ON/OFF switch

Yep, I had seen that also, but when you find your missing things, you also start questioning what someone else had received, I mainly wanted to confirm I was not missing any thing else. But what really through me was when Lionel Warranty said about the air hoses. I have seen this on Atlas and MTH rolling stock but I do not remember seeing this feature on the Lionel scale rolling stock or cabooses. I hope this is something that will become more common!

Very nice, Ryan, thanks for the pics!   I closely watch all the Lionel catalogs, but had forgotten about this one.

As for your coupler question, I think if you read the description line you provided, it means that there are mounting pads FOR scale couplers... not that the couplers are included:

  • Frameincludes pads for Kadee® coupler mounting, for easy conversion to scale couplers

BTW, do those rear marker light operate?

Ron

I am just about to order one of these cabooses since I've not been able to land one second hand here on the forum.  Question...does the caboose actually have a smoke unit inside?

I plan to run it behind my Legacy Polar Railroad K4 (which has quickly become my favorite engine since buying it over the holidays).

How many of you folks run your Polar engines and rolling stock all year long?  Or just at Christmas?

Here's the product page for it.  Yes, it does smoke--I don't know how well, as I've not turned it on.

Polar Railroad/Polar Express is year-round.  I don't own any PE passenger cars, but have all the PRR/PE freight stock and I pull them in consists behind the PRR GP7, the PE Berk, the PE 0-8-0, and the PE FT.  Love the K4 but don't have the curves for it.  May get it at some point anyway because it's so darn beautiful.

I run my Polar Express year round since purchasing. I bought a RTR set (6-31960) originally and have since added the 6-35130 Passenger Car and the 6-36875 PE Conductor Announcement Coach and the 6-28425 Elf Handcar. The attached photos show my current PE mountain run. I had to replace the originally PE RTR engine with a MTH 30-1233 4-6-4 Hudson B&O engine to be able to make the mountain climb up the grades.
The layout in these photos is in my Florida house, which is up for sale, and the reason why the layout is in a messy state. I kept enough of the layout in tack to be able to run my some of my trains.

Funny how this morning I was comparing prices of some PE stuff on the bay and found that it all could be had for less from one of the forum sponsors!

That is the same thing I find, You can get some deals on the bay! That is how I snagged my PE Heavyweights. But I find that Charles Ro and Model Train Stuff is generally cheaper for the new and just released stock! PE scale caboose came from CR and my Legacy 990 controller "New" was only 300.00 from Model Train Stuff!

Hey, I was able to order it from JTT, saw their ad on our For Sale forum home page.  Got a great deal!  Looking forward to it arriving this week.

This was brand new this season.  How could you expect to land a used one already?

To answer your question about how I could expect to find one used already...very easily!  It's not unusual to find forum member selling brand new or 'only run once' items at a discount on the forum.  In fact, some of my most treasured engines and rolling stock has been purchased this way.

Congrats, and Good luck with it! If you did not do so already, please check my first few posts. From what I gathered from other posts  the majority of us were missing some things that it should have shipped with. You may need to contact Lionel to get the extra items!

Cheers!

Updated.......I received the air hoses and the non operating smoke stack. I installed the hoses and they look great! The only down fall is the hoses attach to the frame and not the coupler so I would say they are more designed for the Kadee couplers though they will work as is provided your curves / reversing curves and switches do not cause too much coupler travel.imageimage

Ryan,
Mine did not come with a "non-operating stack".
I see no mention in the instructions about scale couplers or air hoses. However, it did come with a small package that has four small screws that could very well be meant for scale coupler pockets.

That's all we got, the four screws in a bag.

BobbyD I had contacted Lionel for the smoke stack and they informed me of the air hoses that it was packaged with. If you want the extras contact Lionel as we are finding most of the PE cabooses were shipped with out the stack and the air hoses.

Good luck!

The Polar RR does not exist.  Then how can you have anything SCALE for it.  Guess I do not believe in it.

And that's OK everyone is entitled to there own opinion. As many, I am a Polar Express fan and also a Pennsylvania fan and oh yeah I also like the Christmas season. So if I find something related, I typically go for it, as long as it is not to gimmicky. You don't need to like it but you need to respect what other people may like, holiday themed or not. I could babble on but either way you are missing the point on why this post was created. Read the thread from the beginning and you may find there could be some helpful information for any body purchasing a current N5b caboose and are unsure of what should be in the package.
